After a shaky start this morning at Laurel Heights Retirement Residence the afternoon brought out some sharp shooters in both billiards and bocce. Our Billiards table was recently leveled; the boys have said that their crooked bones are having a hard time adjusting. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Terry Draper from Pharmacare who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Inez M. our shuffleboard assistant has stated she thinks she will get the gold medal for most losses this year at the All Seniors Games “You have to be good at something, even if it’s losing.”

At Rutherford Heights, the morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 14 Bocce players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Later the Pool Sharks showed their finesse sinking balls left… right… and center, all the while our DAL residents were spinning rings trying to get to land a medal spot. On the bocce court our new resident Ron received a standing ovation when he scored 10” from the pallina on his first throw in the finals. He commented by saying “who knew when I moved here, I would be playing bocce in the cold of winter” Ron moved to us 20 days ago from Vancouver. Athletes and spectators were pleasantly surprised when they were joined at the award ceremony by our own Dr. Naib, who participated in congratulating all athletes on their performances.

At Lewis Estates Retirement Residence, 8 billiards players, 11 Bocce players and 18 2nd Floor bowlers participated in the days events. Doug played with such enthusiasm as he won the elimination round without even breaking a sweat! His ball was literally rubbing shoulders with the pallina! “Our Italian player did not practice even once for bocce. He held out till the games and still took home the gold!!!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Denaye Sieben from the Ferguson Hearing Clinic, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Don Vella exclaimed: “Wow, it’s been a while!”

At St. Albert Retirement Residence, our independent residents battled it out for bocce ball medals, while other competed at Billiards and we had 6 supportive living residents compete for billiards medals and those men were all pool sharks. Staying in our Supportive living Unit, residents enjoyed a fierce competition for bocce ball medals and we had a full house of family members here cheering on their loved ones. It was such an awesome day! Phyllis “I don’t know if it’s the hallway, the ball or me that’s crooked… (whispers out the side of her mouth) “I’m sure we are all a little crooked, that’s half the fun.” And Arthur observed: “This game is for the birds… now if we were bowling I’d kick all your butts”

The morning got off to an excellent start, the Pool Sharks showed their finesse… Later in the theatre the Bocce Ball was quite a hit. We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Many more people now enjoy Bocce Ball, it will be a regular event on the monthly activity calendar from now on. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Beth from the Strathcona Library, who participated in congratulating all athletes on their performances. As said by a resident of ours,
“Grab your balls its bocce ball time”!

At Auburn Heights Retirement Residence, 17 Bocce Players and 6 Billiards players got off to a great start with fellow residents all cheering each other on and having lots of fun competing. The men playing billiards were a bit more serious and competitive, with some very close games! Leaving 3 billiards players competing in the afternoon for medals, and 4 competing for medals in Bocce. Our bocce game is set up along a long hallway that includes our salon at the very end, so we did have to stop a couple of times to let residents get to hair appointments – the bocce players made the most of this, cheering on residents as they walked through the bocce players to the salon! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by the impressive Diane Jones Konihowski (who played for Canada in 3 Olympic Games including in the pentathlon). Alvina Rempel enthusiastically exclaimed: “Let’s just have fun! I’m just having fun!” – she ended up with the gold medal in Bocce!

At Sage Hill, our morning got off to an fast start as the Round Robin produced 14 Bocce players vying for medals! It was a huge turn out with lots of spectators! Rod, our Gold Medalist, ended his final round with a “kiss” – when the Bocce ball rolls to a stop touching the Pallina. Our Silver and Bronze medalists were each tied with 5 points and had to have a “sudden death” round to determine the winner! Later, our resident Pool Sharks Wayne and Peter breezed through the round robin and ended the morning in a battle of the champions with Wayne finally taking gold. We never realized our dining room floor tilted slightly to the left until today when one of our competitors joked: “Is that the floor or am I just cross-eyed?!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Anita from the Canadian Diabetes Association and Bocce Silver Medalist, Pina Suess, gave an acceptance speech which had us all laughing! Our Billiards Bronze Medalist Kevin Jones, was in disbelief! He said: “I have never won a medal in my whole life!” Our ED, Kelley Deguerre, assured Kevin that it really is his as she to helped hand out the medals.

At Preston Park I Retirement Residence, today’s events produced a Double Gold Medallist, Vivian W. We knew it would be a great morning when a last minute player, who has never played Bocce, joined the tournament andher ball did not go out of bounds once! Our Double Gold medal winner for today has never played in any tournaments before AND beat out her husband in both Bocce and Billiards! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Gerard Dakiniewich from the Saskatoon Ostomy Association, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Silver medal winner of Bocce Ball Marjorie Creasy exclaimed: “Never thought I would be able to say I participated in a tournament at the age of 73 and cannot wait to tell my family.”

Later the Pool Sharks showed their finesse and one of our female residents, Pat Murray, surprised everyone with some amazing performances and advanced to the Final Four! Our Bocce court was packed with so many people that we had to create an artificial border out of pool noodles! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Don Cousins from the Saskatoon Shrine Club, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Norman Reidt observed: “I love the friendly competition during the All Seniors Care Games. The atmosphere is very light hearted and everyone is having so much fun.”

Our Bocce court and games room was swarming with spectators all very excited for Steve O. taking the Silver at the Billiards table – he only became a College Park Resident in the last couple weeks!! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Teagan Homeniuk of Pharmacy West and Karen Lisk, Executive Director of College Park who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. “I know there a lot of men that live at College Park, but did they have to take all six medals today,” quipped one of the ladies at the Awards Ceremony.

At College Park II, the morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 12 Bocce players vying for medals! While down the hall, the Pool Sharks showed their finesse and concentration and you could feel the intensity when you walked in the room! Our Bocce players were shocked how much the ball would curve in some of their throws, many joked about their technique. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by ¬¬¬Carrie with the Lifelong Learning Centre, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Bocce Gold Medalist Margaret S. exclaimed: “I have never been so surprised in my life!” (Margaret was not signed-up in advance, but volunteered to play the morning of so we would have an even amount of players.)

At Victoria Landing the morning got off to an entertaining start as the Pool sharks showing their finesse around the pool table….. 8 players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their shot making abilities! Later in the Our Bocce court saw fierce competition as 16 participants took the court with Mrs. Gwen Marvin stating to the group: “I should play this game more often!” as she was talked into taking part just before the event began. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Julie Hockley from the Alzheimer’s Society who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Silver Bocce Medalist Mrs. Gwen Marvin exclaimed: “What a fun week, we are so lucky!!!”

At Sturgeon Creek 1, 18 Bocce players battled for medals. The morning was full of fun as our Bocce athletes were up bright and early ready to play. You could hear the cheers throughout the building as our athletes made their attempts at perfect scores. The afternoon finals were very exciting with one of our top competitors being Mr. Lloyd Brown. Lloyd has made the finals in Bocce Ball, for the past 8 years. Watching him play, you’d never guess he was 104! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Allison Kirkland from the Arthritis Society who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold medalist and our Chef de Mission, Margaret Johnston didn’t have the best round this morning but just made the cusp into the afternoon playoffs. “What a day” she exclaimed as she accepted her medal with a smile.

At Seine River Retirement Residence, we have never seen so many people around our pool table! Later the Round Robin produced 3 Bocce players with scores under 100! However, when playoffs hit, our nerves went high, although we had lots of fun, we did end up with some higher scores. One of our tenants, who has never played bocce before, decided to sign up on a whim. She shocked us with all her throws in the morning and she ended up making it to the playoffs! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by the Canadian Diabetes Association, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. After the first round of the bocce playoffs and seeing some stress on their faces (as it was a national medal at stake), Health and Wellness Director, Jackie, encourage everyone to just relax and imagine themselves on the beach. The second round didn’t go so well either, so one of the competitors exclaimed, ‘it is just too Darn hot on this beach I guess ’

“Bocce!” was the cry of the day as 38 potential medalists showed up for competition. Nerves got the better of our highly competitive group who threw unusually high scoring shots. There was an unprecedented upset as new Bocce talent Gerald O. skipped past the regulars to take the bronze. There were new sharks cruising the billiards banks as we said goodbye to former billiards champ Jack R. In a surprising twist there were an equal number of male and female sharks in the finals pool this year! Our Bocce court was lined from top to bottom with players and spectators alike and the Bistro was overflowing! A great mix of tenants, families and friends. We have never seen crowds like this. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Derek Balcaen, Senior firefighter/paramedic with UFFW who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. The unfortunate victim of an 8-ball scratch, Billiards shark Ed H. was having a great game – so much so, after a brilliant trick shot to sink one in the side pocket, he commented, “Geez, I must have a horseshoe up there” (pointing to his seat) – to which fellow player Chuck R. mused….”I thought you were walking funny!” Next shot sunk the eight ball… Moral: never count your chickens………

At River Ridge II, we had 9 bocce players battle for medals. We had fun playing for non-competitive billiards this morning…but the action happened in the afternoon during bocce, where everyone cheered on their friends. Our tenants weren’t having a great bocce game, blaming everything from the weather outside to competitors making noise, but we made the best of it with our gold medalist getting 48!! Mrs. B stated: “I didn’t think I could win two days in a row…it must be divine intervention!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Catherine Kaufmann, Dementia Friendly Communities Coordinator from Alzheimer Society of Manitoba who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Ms. O. mentioned: “A person should find an activity that interests them and participate in and not sit at home…that is what ASCSG are all about!”

You could sense the competition in the air during the Billiards competition as Mr. McM. shushed the crowd before his gold medal winning pressure shot to sink the 8 ball! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Amanda Reimer, Manitoba Physiotherapy Association, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. When being presented with her second gold medal of the day for Snakes & Ladders and Ring Toss in the Boulevard, Mrs. T. leaned over to our presenter and whispered, “Come see me after and I’ll tell you my secrets!”

Later the residents showed their finesse in Archery. Residents became fans as they stayed to cheer on their fellow residents in the Bocce playoffs! Many amazing shots were made throughout the morning with the residents all cheering each other on and wanting each other to improve on their previous shots. A sense of support was definitely being felt around Cedarcroft Place today! Residents were joined at the award ceremony by Pam, from the Perth County Alzheimer’s Society, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes from the Bocce Ball and Archery events on their performances. Gold Medalist in Bocce, Mr. S exclaimed: “Jeez was I ever lucky!”

We had a very busy day at Beacon Heights as 8 Billiards players and 18 Bocce players battled for medals. In the morning, we played Billiards, we had an odd number of players. Two residents couldn’t agree on who was the “worst” player so, a fellow resident decided to give away his spot. Irene C. was also ready to give her place to someone else to play and in the end, Irene played and won the silver medal. Some of the great players got surprised by novice players…it was fun!! For the Billiard competition, we had an odd number of people so Bocce was also a great time. Lots of encouragements and laughter! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Pam Story, ED and Ben Sommerville, ED Associate who gave the medals to the winners and congratulated all the participants.

At Cité Parkway, 8 billiard players and 10 bocce players battled for medals. The morning got off to an excellent start our local pool sharks came out to win! We had some stiff competition, and many laughs! The finals were Mr. L. VS. Mrs. L. producing a good chuckle at the fact that a Lalonde was guaranteed to win it all! In the afternoon we played Bocce and had a blast! This game was new to many of our residents, and quickly became a new favourite! We are so excited to play this more in the future!! During the medal ceremony Mr. O’Leary kneeled before the City Counsellor Toby Nussbaum to receive his medal and the room shook with laughter. City Counsellor Toby Nussbaum congratulated all athletes on their performances. Almost every resident came down to the dining room for today’s ceremony and the enthusiasm was infectious! Bronze Medalist Frank O’Leary exclaimed: “I am so proud of the turnout! Our community here is really superb!”

At Chapel Hill Retirement Residence, 6 billiards and 9 Bocce players battled for medals. This morning all of our Athletes were eager for the days competition to start with many of the athletes playing in both competitions. It was a whirlwind of excitement as an Athlete finished a game in Bocce only to have to immediately cross the hall to play in Billiards! Our Gold Medal Winner Phillipe Lalonde had never played Bocce before but proved his pure athleticism and determination to win at this most exciting game! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Gordon Kerluke of the Royal Canadian Legion Orleans Branch in charge of Veterans and Aging Division who aobserved: “With the aging population it is important for Seniors to remain physically Active as it not only brings them out of their comfort zones but encourages healthy social interaction.”

Good thing they got registered in time. A hearty laugh was had by all when a fellow competitor pointed out that Mr. C. succeeded in winning the bronze medal in his slippers. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Mrs. Lebel from Viviane Foucault Notary, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Our Assistant of the bolas game France Garceau was honoured to give the medals. Our Miss F. very happy for his first silver medal. Wow a 95 year old lady!

At La Résidence de la gappe 20 pool players and 50 Pétanque Atout players battled for medals.
We had so many competitors register that we needed two rounds of Pétanque atout; Heat One in the morning, and Heat Two in the afternoon. We ended up getting to our Final round where and realized where missing two players, didn’t think they played so well that they made it to the final round. We were able to convince both that they made it to the final round… “who knows at the end of the day you can end up winning a gold medals” advised Pierrette R., our Gold medal winner from la Pétanque atout. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Helene Lirette, Jacqueline McKnight, Lisa Paré to assist Marthe V., a resident that has been here since the buildings opened, in presenting medals to winning athletes. Billiard medals where given by M. Bourgeious who took care the pool league for 7 years who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. “Every day is such a great day at la Résidence de la Gappe, but today is just an amazing day.” exclaimed gold medal winner of women’s billiard Mme. Ella Gouin.

The residence today we had 22 Pétanque players and 10 Pool Sharks. For the morning, we gathered in the library to start the game with many more players that normal including new entries never before seen… Director of Health and Wellness let everyone know “I have a good memory and I better see all of you during our games in the regular weeks.” To which all participants and spectators enjoyed with a laugh. In afternoon was Billiards which started as a very nice competition with 2 residents participating, but competitiveness soon set in and the shot making heated up. Ms. Moore was an inspiration to the other women present by beating several of the men until she was eliminated in semi final. Bravo! Again this was a memorable day, residents who had their first tastes of The Games and asked me to register them for next year’s 9th Annual All Seniors Care Seniors Games to which I replied “Yes of course… more we’re crazy that you have fun!” The medal ceremony went well with a lot of emotion in the air.
