At Laurel Heights, pool sharks and Bocce players battled hard for medals. The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 7 Bocce players vying for medals! Later the Pool Sharks showed their finesse in 9 ball. One of our ladies didn’t want to battle it out with the men but after some convincing; she got the joy of telling her husband that she was playing for the gold medal. “In Bocce there is no such thing as a bad throw. If the ball goes out of bounds it is the floor at fault!” – Rose, Bocce Spectator. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Terri and Pat from Millwoods’ Seniors Association, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Joke of the Day: “You’re so involved with bocce,” whined the wife, “that you can’t even remember the day we were married.”

At Rutherford Heights we had 22 Bocce players and 15 ring-tossers battling for medals. We were very impressed by their skill and talents! While the supportive living residents were looking for that perfect ringer toss to seal their spot in the medal round. After her first throw of the game landed her ball only half an inch away from the pallina resident and silver medalist Virginia B exclaimed: “WOW I had no idea I was so good! haha” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Joanne from The Parkinson’s Association of Alberta, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. JOKE OF THE DAY: Bocce enthusiast Joyce B exclaimed: “Alright, let’s get down to business… we have some bocce ball to play and this game is no joke!”

At Lewis Estates Residence, this morning the games got off with a very intense pool game as all participants came out ready to play. At the end of good competitive pooling game, Don A. and Erick T. will both compete for the Gold Medal and Ken J. and Roy N. for the Bronze in the playoffs. The energy and excitement for Bocce Ball was very enjoyable as participants and supporters were all happy for the efforts put forth by the players. We had six players competing at Bocce this year. Grace L. won Gold while Dorothy K. and Kathleen W. followed in that order.

At St. Albert Retirement Residence the Pool Sharks showed their finesse in a knock out format to win the gold! Our goal medal resident in Bocce today was so excited to be competing again as he had won a gold medal at the Alberta Seniors Games in Bocce! Our medal ceremony was a celebration with Ice Cream Cake and Drinks! The residents all came together to celebrate today’s winners! We had a presentation from the Cerebral Palsy Foundation! During our supportive Bean Bag Toss competition, the room was so packed that we needed to put some residents close to the Bean Bag Board. After one particularly bad toss by a resident, our resident Peter exclaimed “Sure that one almost went out the window over my head!!”

At Summerwood Village, we had 8 pool players and 12 Bocce players battled for medals. The Pool Sharks showed their finesse in excellent rounds. Close shots for most of the games. That kept all the spectators on the edge of our seat! Pom Poms were out and the cheers kept the excitement going! The Bocce Round Robin then produced 8 players battling for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Merico, from the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances; and presented the medals to the athletes! It was a great day here at Summerwood Village!

At Auburn Heights our residents competed for medals in Billiards and Bocce, while Memory Care residents competing in Bean Bag Toss! The Billiards competition was fierce, with total silence and complete concentration covering the faces of the participants. Bocce ball was fun for all, residents hooting and hollering for each other and practicing some of the techniques we learned for warming up in our laughter yoga class at the beginning of the week! The Memory Care residents had a fantastic time competing in Bean Bag toss, with all medals going to ladies today! They were delighted and so proud of their accomplishments today. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Katherine Kuyltjes from the Calgary Kinettes Club who participated in awarding the winning athletes medals, congratulating the athletes on their participation, and gave an informative presentation about what the Kinettes Club does and how they are making a difference every day in our beautiful city. Bronze Medallist Eric G. was wearing a neon yellow Hawaiian shirt today, and after realizing he’d won a medal in billiards, exclaimed “well I thought I should win a medal for this shirt anyway!”

At College Park Retirement Residence, the morning got off to a wild start with so many residents present blocking the playing area the Wellness Director had to climb through legs to get to the other side. (There has to be a joke here some place). 16 Bocce players were vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Later the Pool Sharks jumped into the deep end with a new resident Hank R. taking the silver. “Our Bocce court is one of our hallways. Our Bocce players have to be extremely talented to get the ball closest to the pallina, but the furthest from the residents walking down the hallway.” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Michel Sorenson from Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

At SC II, 18 Bocce players hit the court bright and early in the morning. Our bocce assistant threw out the 1st pallina, and the games were off. Three rounds of stiff competition ensued, and 3 players rose through the ranks of play, and emerged victoriously with medals!!! Our every faithful cheerleaders did their best to guide the balls by waving their pompoms in the air!!! Much laughter and cheering rang throughout the dining room and lobby. Observers entered the dining room to find out what all the hub bub was. The cheering and laughter they heard in the lobby lured them in to see what the excitement was all about. Athletes were joined at the medal ceremony by Tam Yamashita from Osteoporosis Canada. Tam presented a short presentation to all before assisting with presenting the medals to the bocce winners.

At Seine River Retirement Residence, 6 pool sharks and 36 Bocce players battled for medals. The morning got off to an excellent start as the Pool Sharks showed their finesse. Our skill levels were perfectly matched, and each game was a nail biter! Later, the bocce courts were alive, as our players and cheerleaders took over the dining room as our Bocce players vied for medals! We had a range of talents, but in true Seine River spirit everyone was cheered for as loudly as the next! Our tenants have been so into curling lately, that with every soft bocce throw, you could always hear someone yelling, ’Sweep’ or even a tenant hopping up and doing the sweeping motions! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Barb from the Canadian Diabetes Association, who gave a great presentation and a lot of valuable information! She also participated in congratulating the athletes on their performances. Tenants were joking with each other that we had both tears of laughter and tears of sorrow during our bocce tournament today, as not every throw went exactly to plan!

At River Ridge I residents turned out in droves to try their luck at Bocce and Billiards. Lots of new faces filled the Bocce court gallery while many in the Bistro reminisced on their misspent youth in pool halls of old! The Bocce green had new visitors as the WKCI Wolverine Hockey team showed up to take on the River Ridge All Stars, but in the end, the students were quickly ‘schooled’ by the veteran Bocce players! 24 players took to the court in a battle over the Palino! Over in the Bistro, the pool sharks cruised the felt. The Wolverines were quickly challenged by Team River Ridge who produced their own team jerseys. Luckily no one threw down their gloves or pulled off jerseys. Instead, there was cheering, joking and all round good spirits! …and a couple of amazing trick shots! “Bocce was not our amico (friend) today; we threw high scores but it was probably because we were so excited!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Eden Ramsay, from Ronald McDonald House who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. ADVICE OF THE DAY: Gold Medalist Ken McColl offered: “in pool, it’s not about getting the ball in the pocket, it’s about knowing where your ball ends up!”

During the morning bocce round, Mrs. M. showed that athletes really do have their superstitions as she waited for the red bocce ball to be switched to a green because her husband is Irish and that’s what he’d want her to use. It must have worked since she ended up touching the pallina that round! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Grace and Ginger from the Canadian Mental Health Association, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. During the bean bag toss in the Boulevard, Mrs. B. exclaimed “I swear the holes on that board keep moving!” as her bean bag soared past the corn-hole board.

Some residents were just too strong – they’ve been going to too many exercise classes – and other residents were right on the money, rolling their bocce ball within inches of the pallina. Gold Medalist Ms. B. exclaimed: “It’s not just about winning. It’s laughter, being with other people, and having fun. That’s what the games are all about.”

At The Courtyards on Eagleson 25 Athletes battled for medals in Horse Shoes. It’s wonderful to see the effort and determination in each athlete as they compete using mobility aides such as walkers and wheelchairs. Nothing can keep the competitive spirit down with this wonderful group of seniors. We had 15 athletes hovering around the 11 point mark and it wasn’t until the last few athletes went that we had our Gold and Silver medalists toss remarkable scores of 17 and 15 respectively. Everyone had a ton of fun as we cheered each other on with the motivating Live music from Nigel Harris. We had an impromptu dance party because we finished the game about 10 minutes prior to the medal ceremony. What a fun day!!!. Oreo the Cat kept coming onto our Horse Shoe “pit” and sitting right beside the Horse Shoe Stake! That cat is always trying to be the centre of attention!! And today he sure succeeded – not to mention that his owner brought home the Silver Medal – Way to go John S. and Oreo!! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Barbara McDougall from Tea and Toast who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Barbara then escorted several athletes into the dining rooms and enjoyed a delicious lunch served by “Chefie”. Competitor Beverly S. felt sorry for the three horse walking around in their socks. When I asked her what she meant, and she replied “Well you’ve got six horse shoes in your hand, that must mean there are 3 horses out there without shoes on!!!!

Another great day at Beacon Heights. We started with the billiards competition this morning…we had 10 gentlemen registered to play. We had some very good players at BH and some who are more amateur…we had to pursue the rounds in the afternoon to get the winners…Some of the ladies watching decided that they were going to practice this year and be playing during next year games. Then we played Bocce ball, another fun game…lots of excitement and laughter. Pascale Lalonde from the “Council on Aging” came to explain to the residents what their mandate is and how they go about helping the seniors. Very interesting! Did you know that in 2031, seniors will make up over 20% of Ottawa’s population? “Residents started making jokes by putting the pompom on their head and saying: “Oh I always wanted to be a blonde or a red head!!”

We were very impressed by their skill, talents, enthusiasm and support for their fellow athletes! Later the Pool Sharks showed their finesse in a gripping tournament that left mouths agape when Normand L. took control of the table and attained what he had been waiting all year long to achieve: a sparkling gold medal! The athletes expressed how after months of training for certain games, they were extremely impressed at the results of themselves and their fellow residents! What an exciting week! JOKE OF THE DAY: Gold Medalist Helene C. quipped: “Why is woman’s soccer so rare? It’s hard to find enough women willing to wear the same outfit!”

At Chapel Hill Retirement Residence, the morning got off to an early start as our Bocce Players came down early to cheer on the Billiards players! We had many first time Bocce Players who were surprised at their own skill. The competition inspires you to test your limits and try something new that is the beauty of the All Seniors Care Senior Games. Last year’s Gold Medalist Yvette R. was on fire again with her skills so much so that one of her male competitors stated she has an unfair advantage because of how closer she is to the ground!

At Résidences de la Gappe phase 1, we had residents from our regular and care floors playing together at the sand bag competition. One resident decided to pretend that the bags were tomatoes, making a tomato sauce to the great joy and amusement of the other competitors! Today we threw sand bags but dreamed of sand beaches (it is very snowing in our region today 10 to 15cm.)

We were very impressed by their skill and talents! “It’s only the middle of the week of the ASCG but at the end of the day during our medal ceremony our activity director Annie accidentally had given the wrong medal for the wrong sport to the wrong person. We all started laughing like it was a laughter yoga session. It was too funny! We then gathered our cheerleaders our residents to encourage our participants in the games today, it was magical! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Marthe Villeneuve our Pétanque atout assistant, M. Jean Claude Gelly our billiards assistant, Hélène Lirette our general manger, Annie Levesque and Jacquie McKnight director of activities of phase 3 and 4, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. JOKE OF THE DAY: Why did the chicken cross the road? Because there were chicks on the other side.

The competition started strong but with so much laughter. Later on the Pool Sharks showed their skill… two women and six men. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Michelle, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. And again this year Carson, gold medalist of Pétanque Atout did his outstanding dance of joy!!!
