Later the Pool Sharks showed their finesse… “Our Bocce court was not the smoothest, but we rolled with the bumps and jumps and made some skilled shots!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by the Alzheimer’s Society, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Harvey exclaimed: “Who will take the second shot in this snooker game? Find out after the break.”

At Rutherford Heights over 25 Bocce players battled for medals. The day got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced more than 25 Bocce players vying for medals and a packed cheering section showing great support! We were very impressed by their skill and talents with eyeing the pallina and rolling their bocce balls with expertise precision! There were some amazing shots made today! “Two players accumulated 360’’ by rolling out of bounds on all 3 throws in the playoffs prompting a second playoff for the 2 players. Good thing new resident Tony H. pulled it together, straightened things out and found the right amount of power to keep his next throws inbounds to win the bronze medal. Bocce players were joined at the award ceremony by The Alzheimer’s Student Association of Edmonton who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Bronze Medalist Tony H. exclaimed: “Boy oh boy, can we have unlimited throws and add our best scores from there? This is big pressure, I want that medal!”

At Lewis Estates Residence, we had 7 players compete for the chance to be crown ASCSG Billiards champion. The top three players in the playoffs were very good and displayed an intense game for the fans. With Bocce Ball, we had 8 players participating in the games and showcasing their arm strength and accuracy in front of a capacity crowd. In the end both games today were very competitive and thrilling for all fans at Lewis Estates Residence. “Our Bocce court is crooked hence why our throws are not good enough ha ha” says Kay W.” Winners of both Billiards and Bocce Ball were joined by the winners from our Memory Care for the Medal presentation. Denaye Ferguson (Ferguson Hearing Aide) and Tanya Degrace (Executive Director) also joined our winning athletes and congratulated them for their performances.

At St. Albert Retirement Residence, 8 bocce players and 8 pool sharks battled for medals. The morning got off to a rolling start as the bocce players left everything out on the field. All the competitors were really on the ball! Later in the morning, Billiards was heating up with some tension about the rules – but right on cue, our assistant Earl set everyone straight and put a good spin on it. The finals came down to the 8-ball – and Vic was slated for victory! He chalked it up to good luck. Our bocce court runs down the hallway near the theatre – the only stretch of space that’s long enough to accommodate the game! Sometimes we have to stop to let residents and staff through – reminds the residents of playing hockey on the street as children and yelling “Car!” when traffic would come through! Athletes were joined at the medal ceremony by Julie, from At Home Tax, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances and awarded the medals. Gold Medalist Betty exclaimed “well that’s a surprise!” when finding out she had won the Gold in Bocce.

At Summerwood Village, 8 Billiard Players and 7 Bocce Ball players battled for medals. This morning started off with our athletes battling out their skills at “bowling” the bocce ball to see who could get their ball closest to the pallina. Lots of “oooohs and ahhhhhhs” echoed through the hallways. During our Billiards round robin, some big upsets occurred when the inderdogs advanced to the finals. Bocce Ball proved to be just as exciting with a referee being needed to confirm the rules and advance one of our players. Billiards finals came down to the last 4 balls on the table! It was a very close competition to determine our winners today! Our Gold medal winner in Bocce, Inger J. came within 18” of the pallina with one of her throws! CNIB joined us with an information table and then presented our Athletes with their medals for the day. Billiards silver medalist claimed today, “We should have put the bets on the table!” As we round up day 3, we look forward to the continued fun tomorrow!!

Everyone was in good spirits cheering on others during each match. The day ended off with a close final separated by only a few inches! The billiards matches also started off bright and early. There were a lot of pool sharks in the building but only one could come out on top. “Team work makes the dream work” in regards to the bocce national competition as everyone cheered on the final three competitors to win a grand medal! The room was full of laughter, camaraderie and smiles. Later the Pool Sharks shook hands, flipped coins and battled for 3 hours of play. 95 year old Joe knocked out one player after another to the very end until Gerry beat him out in an extremely close game before winning gold! Our athletes were joined by the Canadian Institute for the Blind. We learned a lot and Look forward to working with them more!

College Park Retired Residents have been on a roll this morning with games of Billiards and Bocce flying by far too quickly with tough competition! We’ve been practicing hard and many eager for afternoon playoffs! Our morning at College Park began by greeting CTV for an early morning start to the day! This had us buzzing from the get go and ready to start the day! Our competition is striving to succeed in their games and excitement is rising! We are truly enjoying the games so far! Our CTV interview went off without a hitch, we are ready for our day and couldn’t be happier to be one of many hosting the 10th annual All Senior Care Senior Games! All involved at College Park are so grateful, including friends and family cheering us on! Much anticipation throughout CP1 as Bocce was quite intense and Billiards had us all on the edge of our seats! Bill says to Jack while being awarded; “Now stand with me and behave will you!” Jack says to Bill; “Is there something you don’t understand about this game?”

Typically, Billiards here has been a “men’s sport”, but two new ladies played in today’s competition. One of which, Judith, won gold! Bocce Gold Medalist Anne B exclaimed: “I will be 97 at the end of the month, and today was the first day I’ve played this! I didn’t think I would go this far, and now I feel proud!”

Our athletes laughed and cheered as they made their attempts at the perfect score. Later in the day, the Pool Sharks showed their finesse with a sudden death tournament. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Samantha Holland from the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba who participated in congratulating everyone on their performances. We had three residents win their first medal as part of the Seniors Games and their facial expressions are truly priceless as they realize they have won! It’s now time for the joke of the day from our building jokester. “How do you get a tissue to dance? Put a little boogie in it!”

At SC II, 19 Bocce players battled for medals. It was the most exciting Bocce tournament in the history of the Games at SC II. We had more consistent lower scores than ever before. It looks like all the regular practice payed off in a big way this year! Players were joined by our ever-faithful following of cheerleaders to make the competition one of the best ever! Our Bocce court was laid out in the dining room and despite, or in spite, of the fact that the floor is more level than the usual playing area, the players adapted to the surface, and rose to the occasion of playing better than ever. Athletes and tenants were joined at the medal ceremony by Linda from Osteoporosis Canada, who brought greetings and a short presentation before assisting with the bestowing of the medals on the Bocce winners. One player kept her glasses on for the first rounds of play but decided to take them off for the finals. Amazingly—she did better without the glasses, which she wears all the time!

At Seine River, 23 Bocce and 8 Billiards players battled for medals. This morning got off to a great start with our billiard tournament. We had many spectators with pom-poms in hand ready to cheer! The competition was exciting, and everyone had a great time. Our bocce tournament brought out 23 players as well as many spectators eager to watch. We determined our top players for our playoff round in the afternoon which brought even more spectators to cheer the participants on with pom-poms. The winners were determined and are looking forward to collecting their medals! During our playoff round of bocce, the pallina was thrown out and was almost touching the out of bounds line making it very difficult for the players to not throw out of bounds. All but two players were able to keep their balls within the court for that round. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Derek from Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. “People are going to think there is an owl living here with all of us cheering “Wooo Wooo” all day!”

At River Ridge I Retirement Residence, we grasped at victory and tasted defeat. Our Bocce bowlers were on point in the morning with balls snuggling up to the pallina measuring 9 and 7, but the pressure of the finals showed in our end scores. Good thing there were tonnes of laughs and cheers! At the billiards table, a number of unexpected victories caused spectators and competitors to remember the adage “never judge a book by its cover!” For the first time ever, we had 12 pool sharks cruising the table, with 5 out of the 12 competitors being women! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Irene Konsmo, a peer leader from the Get Better Together program, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Henry M, Gold medalist for Billiards, was full of quips and jokes, most of which were hilarious but not ones I can post online…. Chuck R who rivaled him and received Silver, encouraged the chirping, and, thanking Henry for setting up a shot for him, asked if Henry thought he make it – Henry shot back “maybe, if you want me to make it for you!” After Henry kissed the final eight ball, he and Chuck laughed and shook hands.

The morning got off to an excellent start as Bocce players who competed intensely for medals! We even had a tie for the gold medal that resulted in play-offs. Later the Pool Sharks showed their determination. Some had not played in a while but were more than willing to rise to the challenge of competing! Today we had a first time player decide to sign up for Bocce! Having residents try something new is just another great aspect of the ASCSG. The audience gave each of our finalists a big round of applause which keeps spirits and momentum with high and the energy going for the remainder of the week! Recipients gave big smiles as they proudly took the stage to claim their medals. Gold Medalist Mrs. B. exclaimed: “I didn’t think this was my game anymore!”

Mr. B. was so excited getting his third medal of the Games today in the Boulevard Bean Bag Toss! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Roberta Malam from the Rady JCC, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Dr. McI. was getting right into the bocce game this morning during the round robin as he struggled to get his sweater off and three of our Shaftesbury Park Team jumped up to help and he exclaimed, “Wow, I’ve never been undressed by three girls at the same time! Must be my lucky day!”

At The Courtyards on Eagleson today 35 players battled for medals while showing their skills at Horse Shoe toss! Most of the horses weren’t too happy when we took their shoes off for today’s competition but the Mare’s sure were relieved! Today’s stiff competition of Horse Shoes, as it is a strenuous game, we had to take a break to Dance, Dance, Dance before presenting the medals to our winners of the day. Activity assistant Breanna lead volunteers Emily and Dale, ED Bonnie, LD Juanita and several family members as they demonstrated their dancing skills – residents had a great laugh as none of us are as skilled as they are! The residents at The Courtyards support each other, today two of our players who had the opportunity to be part of the final round, appointed other players to “GO FOR IT”. Paul D. passed his opportunity for the chance to win to his good buddy Mike. S who ended up winning gold today! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Amy Friesen-McConnell from Tea and Toast Consultants who participated in congratulating the winning Athlete’s on their performances. Jean M., after not being happy with her score, “oh heck, well, I’ll be back next year” Jean ended up winning the Silver medal today!

Another great day at Beacon Heights. We started with the billiards competition this morning, we had 8 gentlemen registered to play. We had some very good players at BH, we were very impressed by their skill and talents! Later the Pool Sharks showed their finesse…we had to complete the finals in the afternoon to get the winners. We started our game in the morning as well, due to the high volume of residents registered to play pétanque atout, this will be the first year that our residence will be competing for medals. They really enjoy it and have been practicing religiously since this summer… lots of excitement. Mr. L. came down with his wife and she came to show us one of her first t-shirts, when she started competing in the ASCSG back in 2012, she had her ribbons on one of them and she had another t-shirt full of tie die, she was very proud to share those memories with all of us in the room this morning. Words of Wisdom on staying active: Mr. L. starts off the morning having a good breakfast, get some exercise in daily. The Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by our chef de mission Réjeanne Desforges. Mrs. Desforges, congratulated the winning athletes on their performances and was proud to be able to give each one their medals.

Boy did it get loud quick! “Quite the wakeup call!” Then it was to the pool table for an exciting game of billiards “I need to sink the 8 ball said Mrs. P.” Many residents came down for the award ceremony just to congratulate and enjoy the excitement. Rachele from the Ottawa Food Bank had the pleasure to hand out the medals. The winners then enjoyed a nice glass of champagne. A top Billiard player’s “secret – “Aim while standing.”

Bowlers were joined at the award ceremony by Notary Lebel of Vivianne Fouceault who congratulated the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Madame Juliette G. exclaimed: “At 98 years old I might as well play until I am 100.”

At Château Symmes, 16 bowlers battled for medals. We have competitive athletes who all want to excel. Athletes were joined at the medal ceremony by Monique Girouard, Château Symmes’ Lifestyle Director. She was happy to congratulate the winners and all participants on their performances. Today, we also celebrated Mrs. W’s 94th birthday. She was truly hoping to celebrate with a medal… Friends told her that she will need to put that off until next year! We would like to note the active participation of our Dear Ladies at each competition – They won all 3 sandbag medals!!! Lets not forget the participation of the residents living on our care floor – Mrs. B., Mr. S., and Mr. M. fought for the bronze. But guess who got the medal!? Obviously Loretta.

At Résidences de la Gappe, Phase 3 & 4, 35 residents battled for a pétanque-atout medal, 6 men and 4 women battled for a billiards medal. This morning, Mr. R. did not want to play billiards but his wife finally convinced him and he won the silver medal! Mr. Charles Alluin of Lobe joined the players at the awards ceremony and congratulated the winning athletes for their performances. Today was Mr. C’s day… He won 2 GOLD medals! He was very proud of himself and so were we! There was a super nice atmosphere at the pétanque-atout with a large number of participants and spectators who came to encourage other residents!
