Day 1 – Walk & Roll and Opening Ceremony
Day One of the Games was a huge success! We are thrilled to share recaps from each residence.
Auburn Heights Retirement Residence
“I can’t start the day without Lemons, Salt and Tequila!!” – Shirley
At Auburn Heights Retirement Residence, we had 35 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. Doris, Rich, Ellie, Doug, and our 102-year-old Maxine (!) walked all floors. Talk about an example of the enthusiasm the residents in Calgary Alberta have for the Games!
Athletes and Volunteers were joined at the Opening ceremony with Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek and City Councilor Evan Spencer as they congratulated the athletes on their performances.
Also in attendance were: Jean L and Doug W, Chefs de Mission. Game Assistants, PALS – Meeko & Jessica. With the Games officially open, everyone at Auburn Heights is looking forward to the week ahead. You can feel the excitement in the air!

Aspen Heights Retirement Residence
Our First Annual Seniors Games at Aspen Heights Retirement Residence was a huge success! We have estimated 75 attendees. The Ceremony commencement by renowned Calgarian Bagpiper Jeanie Schultz was moving. With Aspen Heights Managers, City Councillor Richard Pootmans and Community Liaison Suzy Trottier in procession, it was beautiful!
The procession was followed by speeches from Executive Director Barbara Thorne and Director of Health and Wellness, Maddi Thauberger, The cheerleading team The Aspenettes prepared a fun 5 minute cheer lead by Activity Aid Sue. The Aspenettes are comprised of 12 lovely residents. Husband wife team, Sue and Herald, composed a song specific to the Seniors Games. They played guitar, keyboard and sang. City Councillor for Ward 6, Richard Pootmans, demonstrated the bean bag toss game. Our residents enjoyed his company and many inspiring conversations were had. Community Liaison Suzy Trottier circulated the room and watched the ceremonies. The day ended with Walk the Halls with approximately 35 residents participating. One group just kept going well past closing as they continued their stride and sang to Elvis playing on the PA system!
Preston Park I Retirement Residence
At Preston Park we had 60 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be in today’s kickoff event, the Hallway Walk & Roll!
An especially fun part of the day was the unveiling of the Olympic Ring Donuts, brought to us by Nestor’s Bakery!
Athletes and Volunteers were joined at the Opening Ceremony by:

The theme of this year ‘s Games is When Life Gives You Lemons. As we engage in a week of active living, we will celebrate all the ways to “Make Lemonade!” Co-Chef de Mission Olga, reminds us, “It is all about a good attitude—don’t dwell on your discomforts, think positive!”
Co-Chef de Mission Sylvia gave such an inspiring speech stating, “It is a privilege to live as long as we have. Older age is a privilege, and we are grateful to keep moving—there isn’t anything exercise and team comradery can’t help improve, both for our mind and body.”

At Preston Park II Retirement Residence, we had around 40 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. We had Dick S. walk all 6 floors twice, which is just another example of the enthusiasm the residents in Saskatoon have for the Games. Building pride is running high here this week. When Barry F. came down for the walk, he had an old ASCSG name tag covered in previous years sticker! What a way to keep the memories.

College Park I Retirement Residence
At College Park Retirement Residence, we had 62 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. We had Resident Gladys W. walk all 4 floors at least 3 times! She aims to walk a minimum of 4,000 steps a day and sometimes hits upwards of 10,000 steps! Wow!

College Park II Retirement Residence
At College Park II, we had 10 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. Caroline S lead the 10 enthusiastic walkers through 4 floors. Spirits were kept high by special guest K9, the mascot for Regina Pats Hockey Team. Residents were definitely surprised to see a big red dog in our main entrance to join their walk!

River Ridge II Retirement Residence
“I’m 100 years old and so very happy to be joining in my very 1st ASCSG!” – Mr. D.
At River Ridge II, we had 56 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. At 100 years, Mr. D. walked all 4 floors and then some! He also sang and danced with our amazing Entertainment Tannis Tyler.
The excitement of the opening ceremonies along with Stylings of Tannis Tyler continued well into the lunch hours.

Seine River Retirement Residence

At Seine River Retirement Residence, we had 95 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. What a turnout!!
We had Chef de Mission Sylvia M walk a total of 25 laps around the building! I believe this is a new Seine River record, which is just another example of the enthusiasm the residents in Winnipeg have for the Games. Building pride is running high here this week.
Resident and Chef de Mission Sylvia M said, “I thought we were walking for 2 hours! I wouldn’t have paced myself!” Extraordinary! As she walked 25 laps during the hour long Walk & Roll event!

Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence
“My Life has had a few lemons in it over the years but not since I moved into the Shaftesbury. I love the games and plan on squeezing lots of fun out of this week’s events!” – Mary, resident
At Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, we had 135 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. This might just be an all-time ASCSG number of walkers and rollers!
We had Jasuanti K walk all 3 floors which is just another example of the enthusiasm the residents in Winnipeg, Manitoba have for the Games. Building pride is running high here this week. After the morning walk and roll, our Chef de Mission Mrs. Betty Anne H. could not believe how much fun she had doing the walk, saying that this is a very good way to kick off the games!
We were honoured this year to be joined at Opening Ceremonies by the Honourable Wab Kinew, Premier of Manitoba.
Athletes and volunteers were congratulated on their performances by Lily Goodman, Chief Operating Officer and Tricia Charles, Vice President of Operations of Manitoba, All Seniors Care.

The 2024 Seniors Games at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence were officially opened by our Assistant Chef de Mission, Mrs. Gail F as she welcomed all guests and participants. Athletes and volunteers were joined at the Opening Ceremony by community, business and government dignitaries who shared their stories of love and wished our athletes well in the week ahead.

Walk & Roll Event:
At Sturgeon Creek 1 we had 40 walkers making the trek, putting themselves to the test to see what their final distance would be. We had many residents walk all 4 floors, which is just another example of the enthusiasm the residents here at Sturgeon Creel I have for the Games. Building pride is running high here this week, which makes it that much more fun!
Each floor had a different special guest “Water Table Representative” to cheer on our walkers. Merianne our fitness instructor, Connie Newman Executive Director Manitoba Association of Senior Centers, Chelsea Jamieson-Wind nurse at the Grace Hospital, Rene Tucker retired nurse from Health Science Centre, Jessica and Kristi from Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, and finally the Winnipeg Police Service. We thank everyone for joining us on this special opening day!

Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence
At Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence we had many early birds, and some not so early birds, come out to take part in the Walk & Roll event, making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. Barb M. was so proud of herself and declared “I made it all 4 floors—even surprised myself!!” And what an amazing accomplishment!! Well done, Barb, and thank you for inspiring us all.
Tenants were joined by some familiar faces at the water tables on each floor of the building as they travelled the distance. The water table VIPs – Cheryl Hunt, Andrea Robin, Cesne Rodney and Gary Palidwor – encouraged and cheered on all the walkers and rollers! Happily almost everyone who started out completed all 4 floors.
Cornhole assistant Joan W schooled most of the dignitaries in a demonstration of cornhole toss. It was really just for fun, but there was definitely that feeling of “friendly” competition in the air!!

As soon as resident Stuart heard the music playing, he couldn’t help but start dancing and singing along.

Chapel Hill Retirement Residence
“Forget the lemonade … we need Margaritas!!!” – Doug
At Chapel Hill Retirement Residence, we had 18 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. Resident Ermes, who LOVES to walk walked the halls nonstop for the full 30 minutes of our Walk and Roll. Other residents watched and cheered him on.
Theresa showed that age and ability doesn’t matter – you can always participate. Theresa has been in a wheelchair for the past few years and rather than miss out on the Games, she asked a friend to push her chair during the Walk and Roll. Well done Theresa!
With Speeches from the incredible Maureen H (Chef de Mission), Makenzie Baker, and Allison Boraman the games are starting out better than we could have hoped. All 8 of our incredible Assistants and our amazing Chef de Mission helped show our other residents the true reason why we participate in this event. Our incredible mascot, Charlie, also joined us for our opening ceremony and had everyone laughing while we took our pictures.

Fox Hollow Retirement Residence
At the Beautiful Fox Hollow, we had 69 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. We had Sophie D and Friendly the Fox walk all 4 floors 2 times, which is just another example of the enthusiasm the residents in London have for the Games. Building pride is running high here this week.
Grand Marshal’s Audrey & Jean started in the apartments and stopped off at the theatre and throughout the building as they gathered more and more residents along the way. The march continued to the main dining room. “Friendly the Fox and our Grand Marshal then led the parade to where everyone, our V.I. P’s and Mayor Josh M sat.
Our own Executive Director, Tanis, opened the games. Athletes and Volunteers were joined at the Opening ceremony by Josh Morgan, Mayor of London, who congratulated the athletes on their performance.

At McCarthy Place Retirement Residence, we had 36 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be. We had John G walk all 4 floors 2 times! Lakeridge Heights Retirement Residence
At Lakeridge Heights, we had 35 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be.
Day 1 of Lakeridge Heights 2nd Annual ASC Senior Games was jam packed with excitement! Starting the morning off with our “Walk & Roll Warm-up” We decided to switch things up and hold our stretches in the main lobby so we could attract more people to the fun! There was so much noise and enthusiasm! Once all warmed up, residents voted on what the best cheer to chant throughout the halls. Residents were led by our walking assistant Lorraine L through the balloon-filled walls, and really made everyone very excited and they chanted “Go Honeybees” all the way! Management met the walkers with water bottles, fun music, and lots of motivational cheers to keep the people going!! Even management enjoyed the walk, dancing in the halls.
Dignitaries, game assistants and managers were led by piper Steve Yuille. A big thank you for attending:

Resident Diana L gave a speech during the opening ceremony. She wore her medal from previous games. She explained she was super busy last year with moving in, but decided to give the games a try and ended up winning the gold medal. She encouraged other residents to give the games a try, because you never know what could happen. She then did the demonstration for cornhole, bringing her own “lucky bean bags” for the dignitaries to use!
All residents were in great spirits about the Games! With the Games officially open, everyone at Lakeridge Heights is looking forward to the week ahead. You can feel the excitement in the air!

Summit Heights Retirement Residence
At Summit Heights, we had 50 walkers making the trek, challenging themselves to see what their final distance would be.
During the Walk & Roll, Assistant Chef De Mission, Arthur, started dancing through the halls to the music. His high energy was infectious, and it set the stage for the fun-filled events to come. We had all 50 residents participating, walking, and dancing through the 1st floor 4 times, to the Lemon Tree Happy Music. Check out the video on Facebook! Then they stopped for some lemonade and snacks. The enthusiasm of the residents for the games is at an all-time high. They are ready. Let the games begin!

Cataraqui Heights Retirement Residence
Cataraqui Heights was buzzing for Day 1 of the Senior Games! It was a sea of white with everyone in their ASCSG T-Shirts as they filled the dining room for our Opening Ceremonies. Joined by City Councillor Paul Chaves, our Chef de Mission Opened the Games and our halls filled with residents walking all floors. We were then joined by Barrack, the Mascot for the Kingston Frontenacs and their players followed. The Bistro and Games room filled with residents showing off their Bean Bag Toss and Billiards skills, along with the Frontenacs taking their turn with Laddergolf.
“It’s so great to see everyone come together for this and get involved! I’m looking forward to the Bean Bag Toss competition!” exclaimed one resident.
The Cataraqui Cheerleaders put on a show, encouraging and motivating all of our athletes! We can’t wait to see what day 2 brings!
Résidences de la Gappe, Phase 3
We walked 5 times from phase 3 to phase 4, with lots of participation!
The residents were in fine form and to see them with their pompoms and their beautiful smiles gave everyone so much joy.
The Games were magnificently led in with bagpipes. Athletes and volunteers were joined by the Deputy Of The National Assembly of Quebec, Mathieu Levesque and his press attachés, and Canadian Member of Parliament Steven McKinnon. Thank you for joining us!
Nous avons marché 5 fois de la phase 3 à la phase 4, avec beaucoup de participation !
Les résidents étaient en bonne forme et les voir avec leurs pompons et leurs beaux sourires a donné à tout le monde tant de joie. Les Jeux ont été magnifiquement menés avec des cornemuses. Les athlètes et les bénévoles étaient accompagnés du député du Québec, Mathieu Levesque et de ses attachés de presse, ainsi que du député canadien Steven McKinnon. Merci de vous joindre à nous ! Nous avons hâte que la compétition commence le jour 2.

The Courtyards on Eagleson
The opening ceremony at Courtyards on Eagleson was a great success!
We are very thankful for Allan Hubley, Councillor for Kanata South and Amy Richer, Regional Director of Operation for Eastern ON for joining us at the opening ceremony. After the speeches, Allan Hubley ,together with our ED Bonnie Lacroix and Chef de Mission June M, officially opened the game by playing Bean Bag Toss.
Our Motto is: “Get active and keep the spirit alive!” We are all here to encourage and cherish the spirit of greatness and sportsmanship presented by our talented athletes.

Résidences de la Gappe, Phase 4
We walked 5 times from phase 3 to phase 4, with lots of participation!
The residents were in fine form and to see them with their pompoms and their beautiful smiles gave everyone so much joy.
The Games were magnificently led in with bagpipes. Athletes and volunteers were joined by the Deputy Of The National Assembly of Quebec, Mathieu Levesque and his press attachés, and Canadian Member of Parliament Steven McKinnon. Thank you for joining us!
We can’t wait for the competition to start on Day 2.
Nous avons marché 5 fois de la phase 3 à la phase 4, avec beaucoup de participation !
Les résidents étaient en bonne forme et les voir avec leurs pompons et leurs beaux sourires a donné à tout le monde tant de joie. Les Jeux ont été magnifiquement menés avec des cornemuses. Les athlètes et les bénévoles étaient accompagnés du député du Québec, Mathieu Levesque et de ses attachés de presse, ainsi que du député canadien Steven McKinnon. Merci de vous joindre à nous ! Nous avons hâte que la compétition commence le jour 2.
