At Fox Hollow Retirement Residence, 16 players went head-to-head at Tuesday Night’s Euchre Tournament, showing intense focus and even sharper wits.

Day 4, and it’s time for Bocce Ball. This is the game that we get serious about. Oh, we’ll have fun, laugh, even cheer each other on, but make no mistake, we’re here for the win today. Days and evenings spent practicing and honing our skills, bringing us just that little bit closer to the capturing the gold medal. It didn’t take long after the matches began before the good-natured heckling started, the previous years champion, Derek, making himself the unfortunate target by not so subtly reminding this year’s players of the last year’s standings. A brave move, and what proved to be a miscalculation, as this seemed to galvanise his competitors, bringing about his loss in the second round. Derek, took the loss well, exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship and an even greater sense of humour.

Shuffleboard brought the most raucous crowd with it yet! As each player sent their weights gliding down the lane, it’s progress could be clearly tracked by the sounds of the crowd alone. The long “ooaa’s” diverging into disappointed groans, as they fell short of their mark or were sent cleanly of the end, or cheers as the points were collected. Anticipation and tension growing as each match brought us closer to the finals, and then we were there, the game was on. Cheers echoing down the halls, drawing curious people in to see what all the fuss was about and trapping them in the final moments of the match. Each new individual adding their voice and excitement, growing, louder, Louder, and LOUDER. Until…the crescendo, the Gold Medal defining moment. The spectators watching as the weight glided to a stop, Matilda (who is 97!), the unexpected champion, had secured her win as the room exploded in cheers around her.

Turning back time: It’s Tuesday evening and it’s time for Euchre, these being the quietest set of matches we’ve had this week. Make no mistake though, there was still plenty of tension. With each player focused on the game in front of them, calling out the cards as they’re played, and silently strategizing as they each tried to outwit their opponents. Slowly, their numbers dwindled, each game coming to an end. But then there was a problem, Sophie and Betty were tied, this being the first and only tie of the night! In stepped the Euchre Assistant, Walter, resetting the cards for the gold medal match. It soon became apparent who the winner would be with Sophie taking an early lead, then sustaining it to the end, ensuring another medal and proving that Lady Luck was with her for this year’s games.

Recap of Medal Ceremony:

Competitors were honoured at the award ceremony, joined:

  • Wally S, Bocce Ball Assistant
  • Tony M, Shuffleboard Assistant
  • Kerrie Zeka, Director of Care, ASC

A Moment That Made Us Smile:

Today’s moment came to us at the medal ceremony, when Matilda was asked if she had some words for her win. Smiling, and turning to the crowd, she started simply “This is great.” And then “I didn’t think I’d win at all today, and I nearly didn’t. It was supposed to be Vi (her opponent, full name Violet) who made it to the end, but I got to go instead because she wanted to go shopping. So, thank you Vi, I wouldn’t have gotten Gold without you.”

Stay tuned to Fox Hollow’s Facebook page for more highlights as we head into the final day of the ASCSG!
