Best Advice Our Residents Have Ever Received

Posted

They say that with age comes wisdom. A long life can give you a lot of perspective on everything from romance to work to money. Even aging itself is a frequent target of wise and witty aphorisms that can help shed some light on the human condition. There have actually been studies linking age with wisdom, but the best way to prove that we have a lot to learn from our elders is to ask them ourselves. And that’s exactly what we did.

We talked to residents at our seniors home residences across the country to ask them about the best advice they had ever received or that they had to offer. They had plenty of advice, touching on subjects such as how to live life, how to stay young, and how to feel happy. Here’s what they had to say:

“We have two ears so we can listen more than we talk.”

  • Mary, 77, Beacon Heights Retirement Residence, Ottawa, Ontario

“Laugh and the world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone.”

  • Dorothy, Sturgeon Creek 1 Retirement Residence, Winnipeg, Manitoba

“Think young, dress young and you’ll always be young.”

  • Marg H., McCarthy Place Retirement Residence, Stratford, Ontario

“Take a few dollars from each paycheque and save it for a rainy day.”

  • Harold E., 84, Preston Park 2 Retirement Residence, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

“Learn how to sit down and relax. Sometimes we get caught up in big moments when we have to enjoy the little ones.”

  • Joan, MacTaggart Place Retirement Residence, Edmonton, Alberta

“Be kind to others, you never know what they’re going through.”

  • Carol, Summerwood Village Retirement Residence, Sherwood Park, Alberta

“Toujours danser, chanter, bouger et demeurer occupé pour garder un bon moral!”

****

“Always continue to dance, sing, move, and keep busy to maintain good morale!”

  • Madame Lambert, Les Résidences de la Gappe, Phase 3 & 4 in Gatineau, Québec

“When I was a kid, I was lonely and never thought I’d have any REAL friends. Guess I just had to grow up.”

  • Joyce A., River Ridge 1 Retirement Residence in Winnipeg, Manitoba

“Say yes more than you say no. Two weeks after I moved in, I was Elvis and made the cover of a calendar.”

  • Alex M., 72, River Ridge 1 Retirement Residence in Winnipeg, Manitoba

“Walk daily, work hard, grow your own food, and eat healthy.”

  • Sybil, Auburn Heights Retirement Residence in Calgary, Alberta
