The Seniors Games are in full swing, and the energy is contagious! We’re talking Ladder Ball tournaments before 9:00 am. It’s amazing what a little caffeine can do for your aim.
Corn Hole and Ladder Ball were the stars of the show today, drawing in 17 and 20 enthusiastic competitors, respectively. But the real showstopper was our 101-year-old athlete, Joan B. When it was her turn at Corn Hole, she leaned over to her daughter and asked, “What do I have to do?” The answer? “Show ‘em all up!” And she did just that, competing in both sports and even clinching a spot in the Ladder Ball playoffs.
We wrapped up the day with a wonderful awards ceremony, joined by Alana from the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba. What an inspiring day of play!
Today’s Hall of Fame:
- Both of our Chefs de Mission, Dave and Betty, led the charge by bringing home medals!
- Frank suited up in his “lucky shorts” today, and the magic worked. He’s heading home with two more Gold medals!
- Liz S., who only joined us at SC1 this Fall, has already secured her first-ever medal. Talk about a warm welcome!
Fred is officially embracing our rowdy crew; he’s now accepting high fives and smiles, which clearly powered him to his second medal of the games.

Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence
It was our pleasure to welcome so many cheerleaders again this morning. They cheer and encourage each and every player and add something incredibly special to each competition.
Ladder Ball
| Medal | Athlete’s Name |
| Gold | Brian T. |
| Silver | Pat C. |
| Bronze | Joanne C. |
At Sturgeon Creek II, 11 ladder golfers demonstrated their precision and strategy, battling it out for the top spot on the podium! It was an interesting game this morning. At one point, we thought we might be able to develop a new game with the ladder ball rungs—we would only score if the balls went under or over the ladder!!! We had bolas touching the ceiling tiles, some to the left and some to the right and some twirled like batons, but many wound on the ladders themselves.
In typical SC II fashion, we ended up with a tie, and so after breaking the tie, we moved into the play-off round. Play ensued, and after some extremely exciting displays of skill, we came out with our winners. Scores have been sent into head office in the hopes that we will come out with a national medal on Friday.
Cornhole
| Medal | Athlete’s Name |
| Gold | Harvey A. |
| Silver | Gerry A. |
| Bronze | Pat C. |
At SC II, 17 players battled for medals. The theater was filled to capacity, and more, with cheerleaders!! It was a stiff competition as skill sets of the players were well matched. We were not disappointed by the shot making, and truly, there were some terrific throws. Once again, we had to have a tie-breaker round as 3 of the competitors came up with the same score. I’m not sure how they manage this feat as they so often do. In the medal round, all scored well, but we had 3 front runners well defined.
The most touching part of the day came when the medalists for corn hole toss were announced. Harvey A. called me over to inform me that he would not receive his gold medal as he had already won a medal yesterday and he would like to have someone else get the medal!!!! This is a clear illustration the kind of folks who call SC II home. We came to the decision that Charlie B. would receive the medal, as he was one involved in the tie breaker.
Daily Fun Facts
- When Audrey T. let her ball fly, it twirled and swirled through the air before landing on the bottom wrung. From the cheerleading section of the room we heard, “That was a very entertaining shot!”
- Joanne C. had a very slow start to ladder ball this morning, but pulled it out of the bag, advanced to the play-off round, and come out as the bronze medalist!! Just goes to show that you should never give up!!
- Karen, Health & Wellness Director, noticed Brian T., our ladder ball games assistant and winner of the gold medal, rub his tummy before each rotation. I am not sure if the gesture was meant to dry his hand, or maybe was some kind of good luck portent??? Whatever it was, it seemed to work.
- When Pat A. came up to throw the last round in corn hole toss, she sunk one right threw the hole without it making a sound!!! Not only did she score well in that round, but it catapulted her into a strong finish overall. She is a very petite little lady, and I think the corn hole bags might just outweigh her!!!
Recap of Medal Ceremony
Joined by Harvey H., from 1JustCity, today’s medal ceremony celebrated not just winners, but all participants and cheerleaders and one of the kindest acts of fellowship we have witnessed in a very long time.
When Charlie was called to the podium for the corn hole medal presentation. It was Harvey A. who had the honour of hanging the gold around Charlie’s neck. There was scarce a dry eye in the house!
