The spirit of the Tin Man was alive and well at Aspen Heights Retirement Residence today, as residents competed with enormous heart. Bean bag toss and pétanque set the tone for the day, with athletes supporting one another through every roll and toss, showing that kindness and teamwork are just as important as competition.
The Aspennets filled the room with cheers and encouragement, while couples competing together shared good-luck kisses, gentle taps, and quiet words of support before their turns, even when they found themselves competing against each other.

Dignitaries Alex Kwan, Public Information Officer Calgary Fire Department and Randy Chavrier Community Safety Officer of Calgary Fire Department joined us for a ceremony overflowing with pride and emotion. While medals marked the competition, the room was filled with shared joy, encouragement, and heartfelt moments.
We were especially honoured and thrilled to welcome the Calgary Fire Department, who brought a fire truck for residents to enjoy. Residents had the opportunity to take photos both inside and outside the truck—a truly special treat that made the day even more memorable.
The quote of the day made everyone proud! “There is no way I won this silver medal…I will need to show my family they will not believe me until I show them!”

All three of our medal winners for Bean Bag toss are not regular players and they do not have a lot of practice; however, they all wanted to participate in the games just for fun and they were pleasantly surprised to receive their medals! They all want to keep playing these games to improve their scores for next year!

Dignitary Chelsea Breher from The Library of Things joined us for our medal ceremony as the residents were eagerly waiting to hear the results. The medals were stunning, but the real prize was seeing all the smiles and hearing all the support given from todays athletes.
Bronze Medalist Olga Chuey said, “You know, I only sign up for these games because they are so fun and I love to see everyone playing, I surely did not expect to win a medal from it but that’s just the icing on the cake!”

At Preston Park II, 22 competitors battled it out for the medals. When Bean Bag Toss participant, Simon O., was up to throw, Barry F., an excited competitor, asked him to try for 500 and Simon said; “I’m trying MAN!”
It truly takes heart to jump in and try so many events at the All Seniors Care Senior Games; just like the Tin Man discovering his own. Every activity, every cheer, and every smile shows that the biggest strength isn’t speed or score, but the heart you bring to the Games. Bronze Medalist Hazel G. perfectly illustrated this when she said, “I honestly couldn’t even see the board and have played Pétanque only a handful of times. But I am glad I was able to participate!”

Both our Bean Bag & Pétanque events were filled with encouragement, kindness, and heartfelt teamwork. When Ms. J. gave her competitor a big hug after a close match, someone joked, ‘Careful, the Tin Man might start crying again!’ It was a moment full of heart.
The morning began with Bean Bag Toss, and it felt like we’d all stepped onto the Yellow Brick Road—athletes cheering each other on with a kind of magic even the Tin Man would call heart-warming.
Later in the day, we played Pétanque au Tout and our community shined brighter than the Emerald City, showing true courage, kindness, and teamwork—proving that, just like in The Wizard of Oz, there’s no place like a day filled with heart.
At one point, our resident Eloise L said “Is the Tin Man young? Single?” and the crowd during our event went wild!

Day 2 kicked off bright and early with a morning full of Pétanque and Bean Bag Toss. The competition was so fierce we even played right into lunch! Whoops!
Our amazing cheerleaders provided the spark we needed to get through the intense playoffs, and we were honored to have MLA St. James Adrien Sala join us for the official medal presentations.
The podium was packed with talent today:
- Donna R. made an incredible debut in her first-ever games, securing a Bronze in Pétanque.
- Our Chef de Mission, Dave R., led by example and snagged the Gold in Bean Bag Toss.
- Frank proved he’s all talent and no superstitions, taking Silver without even needing his lucky shorts.
- Don was so thrilled with his win that his family group chat was buzzing with photos before the festivities of the day even ended!
- Finally, we have some serious “couple goals” to celebrate, as husband-and-wife duo Fred and Pat O. are both headed home with medals.
Congratulations to all our athletes for representing us with such heart and spirit today!

At Sturgeon Creek II, 14 competitors took to the court to battle it out for the medals. It was awesome to see a brand-new competitor who had never played before, and he scored well in the round robin to give the veterans a run for their money!! Well done, Charlie B.
As always, competitors were joined by an avid group of cheerleaders, and loud ones too, to make the competition the best it could be.
Six players clearly showed what they were made of and moved into the play-off round, where maybe nerves got the better of one but in the end 3 winners were clearly established.
As the competition began at 9:30 a.m., several comments of “We’re not awake yet!” went around the room.
And later, “I’m aiming for that same hole I just went in but it’s not working!”
The bean bag toss event was a great lead off to a week of medal events, and hopefully, everyone will be more awake and feeling in top form for petanque after a bit or rest and a good lunch!!

At SC II, 17 anxious players vied for the opportunity to toss the boules to determine the front runners for the medals. In typical SC II fashion, we had our first tie of the games in the initial round of petanque play. These two players advanced to the final round where each of them secured a medal victory!!

Fun Fact – During bean bag toss this morning, Pat C. was called up to the court and responded with, “What, again?” With only six competitors in the playoff round, the rotation moved quickly. And from that moment on, she was fondly known as Pat Again!
Adding to the fun, we also had two Gerry’s/Jerry’s competing. To keep things straight, we quickly settled on Old Gerry and New Jerry—we suspect those names will stick, as well!!
It’s heartwarming to see so many new faces competing and cheering and it’s awesome see new friendships blossoming all around us this week!

Pauline from the Dementia Society joined us for a ceremony overflowing with pride and emotion. Medals shone brightly, but the true glow came from the smiles, hugs, and joyful tears shared by the athletes as they cheered one another on. As Chef de Mission Reg reflected, “They say the Tin Man needed oil to move, and I can relate … but once he got going, he had plenty of heart, just like us.” Day Two proved that you don’t need a heart made of metal to win gold; teamwork, compassion, and kindness are what truly shine.

The spirit of the Tin Man was alive and well at The Courtyards today, as Day Two of the Games unfolded with enormous heart. From the first event to the final medal presentation, the day was defined by encouragement, kindness, and teamwork that proved you don’t need a heart of metal to compete with compassion.
The morning began with Bean Bag Toss, where athletes cheered one another on with warmth that could melt even the coldest tin. Friendly competition filled the room, but it was the steady stream of encouragement—applause after every throw and smiles shared across teams—that truly set the tone. Later, during the pétanque event, residents continued to show patience and camaraderie, reminding everyone that heart makes every moment more meaningful.
As one observer joked during the day, “Everyone played hard—very competitive, but always kind. The Tin Man might start crying again!” It was a lighthearted moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the day.
That spirit carried into the Tin Man–themed Medal Ceremony, where dignitary Nika S. from Family Physio joined residents and staff for a celebration filled with pride and emotion. While medals marked the achievements of the athletes, the room itself told the deeper story—of shared effort, quiet triumphs, and the joy of being part of something bigger.
Silver medalist Rita summed it up best, saying, “I didn’t win by speed—I won with heart.”
Day Two was a powerful reminder that at the Games, heart is always the greatest victory.

One unforgettable highlight came when resident Nadine H. rose to the challenge, set aside her oxygen, and confidently declared, “I’ve got this!”—a powerful moment of determination that brought the room to its feet.

When Ms. F. was introduced to our Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth visitors, she boldly told them, “Don’t worry I’m going to win the gold medal” Which she then proceeded to do!
When Silver Medalist, Mr. C. asked for her secrets, to which Ms. F replied, “You’ll have to figure it out on your own!” Much like Dorothy and her friends had to find their brains, heart and courage from within!

First time Olympic athlete, Debbie said, “I hadn’t really done anything like this since my stroke — I surprised myself and I am proud of myself.”

VIP guest Mylenne Proulx, soins buccaux, maltraitance des ainés, Alzheimer Outaouais, joined us for the Opening Ceremonies, bringing a sense of pride and emotion that was felt throughout the room. A favourite among our residents, her presence added special meaning to the celebration as medals shone brightly and athletes shared smiles, embraces, and heartfelt moments.
One resident who helped with the decorations reflected that he didn’t volunteer to receive anything in return, but to learn and grow—because there is no age limit to challenging ourselves and trying something new. Adding a touch of humour, Chef de Mission Joy remarked that while the group may move a little slowly, like the Tin Man, they are courageous at heart—just like the Lion.

Day 2: Pushing Your Limits and Competition
Morning: An intense return with the bolas competition, followed by corn throwing. This is when the competition intensifies for national medals.
Afternoon: Finals of the sports tournaments. The goal remains fun, but the feeling of pride and accomplishment is at its peak during the final competitions.
Jour 2 : Le Dépassement et la compétition
Matinée : Reprise intense avec les épreuves de bolas qui est suivit du lancer de maïs. C’est le moment où la compétition s’intensifie pour l’obtention des médailles national.
Après-midi : Finales des tournois sportifs. Le but reste le plaisir, mais le sentiment de fierté et de valorisation est à son comble lors des dernières compétitions.
Résidences de la Gappe – Phase 2
Cette journée a été marquée par une atmosphère chaleureuse, festive et énergique, remplie de moments significatifs de connexion et de joie. Les résidents ont participé avec enthousiasme aux Jeux des Seniors, abordant chaque activité avec détermination, curiosité et un fort esprit sportif. Les tableaux de score étaient suivis avec enthousiasme, créant une compétition amicale et encourageant les participants à donner le meilleur d’eux-mêmes, tandis que des jeux basés sur l’habileté comme La Gappe mettaient à l’épreuve la coordination et la concentration de manière ludique et accessible.
Tout au long de la journée, rires, acclamations et paroles de soutien résonnaient dans la salle, renforçant le sentiment de communauté parmi les résidents et le personnel. Les délicieuses collations partagées entre les activités ajoutaient une couche supplémentaire de confort et de plaisir, offrant à chacun l’occasion de se détendre et de socialiser. La cérémonie de remise des médailles a été un moment particulièrement touchant, mettant en avant les efforts, la persévérance et l’engagement de chaque participant, et remplissant la salle de fierté et de sourires. Dans l’ensemble, ce fut une journée mémorable et ressemblante qui célébrait la participation, le bien-être et la joie d’être ensemble.
This day was marked by a warm, festive, and energetic atmosphere, filled with meaningful moments of connection and joy. Residents took part enthusiastically in the Seniors Games, approaching each activity with determination, curiosity, and a strong sense of sportsmanship. The scoreboards were followed with excitement, creating friendly competition and encouraging participants to give their best, while skill-based games such as La Gappe challenged coordination and focus in a fun and accessible way.
Throughout the day, laughter, cheers, and supportive words echoed in the room, strengthening the sense of community among residents and staff. The delicious snacks shared between activities added an extra layer of comfort and enjoyment, giving everyone a chance to relax and socialize. The medal ceremony was a particularly touching moment, highlighting the efforts, perseverance, and engagement of each participant, and filling the room with pride and smiles. Overall, it was a memorable and unifying day that celebrated participation, well-being, and the joy of being together.
