Today featured four great events at Auburn Heights Retirement Residence, we had 16 competing in bridge, 8 competing in cribbage, 3 competing in scrabble, and 2 competing in sequence! While laughs and smiles were shared, the competition was fierce – All participants had a great time! The sequence game was played and finalized in the morning, while all three other games went into playoffs in the afternoon. The competition was heated with a complete of upsets in scrabble and a surprise first time winner in bridge and cribbage! Today was a very special day as the last day of the Seniors Games it was also one of our residents 102nd birthday! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Councillor Shane Keating and MP Tom Kmiec who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. We also recognized one of our repeat athletes, Cloene L., who over the past 3 years has won 16 medals at the ASCSG! With the Games officially closed everyone at Auburn Heights Retirement Residence is looking forward to preparing for the 9th Annual ASC Seniors Games. You can feel the anticipation in the air and so many new residents are interested in trying out a new game after seeing their friends have so much fun. “We should play sequence more often!”

Today featured two great events at Sage Hill. In the morning, our competitors were ready to settle in to a series of very serious Cribbage matches, battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” round robin tournament. In the afternoon 5 competitors faced off in a very loud and boisterous Trivia challenge led by Assistant Norm K. Ruth C. is a cribbage dynamo – she has been waiting all week for her chance to be the champion! She had her eyes on that Gold medal! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by MP Pat Kelly, MLA Prasad Panda, MLA Michael Connolly, and City Councillor Joe Magliocca, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Our Chef de Mission, Penny Blake, also gave a short speech congratulating our athletes. Rod and The Bottom Dollar Band kicked off our wrap-up party, busting out some fabulous live music while our residents celebrated a fun and successful week of Games. Today featured Bridge and Whist on the independent side and Bean bag toss and trivia on the supportive living side. All participants had a great time. We finished the day off with a celebratory cake and closing ceremony. The band Dark Roots put on an extraordinary performance and the residents loved the music, everyone was dancing up a storm. Today featured 4 great events at Rutherford Heights. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Crib. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, 12 independent participants and 10 from the supportive living floors took to the tables for a battle of Canadian knowledge during Trivia with many more cheering them on from the crowd. And in the afternoon another 8 athletes competed in Kings in the Corner to round out our day of card games. Resident Ron gave up his position in the bronze medal match to take part in the trivia competition. He was happy to say “It’s a good thing I did because it got me a gold medal!” New resident Gillian was thrilled today when she took home a gold medal in crib and a silver medal in kings in the corner. She moved into Rutherford only a couple weeks ago and had never heard of the Senior Games. She mentioned today after the medal ceremony “who would have thought I would be sitting here today with 2 medals around my neck for games I haven’t played in years! It was great to get to play them again.” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Southwest MLA Thomas Dang and City Councillor Bryan Anderson who participated in congratulating all athletes on their performances. There were a few trumps and some big scores. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, 8 participants took to the tables competing in Cribbage. The Bridge competitors were perked up and full of coffee this morning, if we all would have put money on who we thought was going to win we would have been correct, our resident pro Inez M. took the competition in stride. We had our winner in cribbage Norman get a hand of 29! Which is the highest possible hand you can receive in the game. Athletes and Volunteers were joined at the Closing ceremony by Dr. Sharma from Beyond Vision Clinic. Today featured a very popular event at Lewis Estates Retirement Residence with team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Cribbage. Residents were great at helping one another with counting and making sure everyone was one track. I am really proud of our little community here at Lewis Estates. Never let a husband and wife compete at cribbage, when one wins the other automatically claims that they cheated! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by MLA Jon Carson and Councillor Andrew Knack, who participated in congratulating all competitors on their performances. For our closing ceremony we had the Central Lions Swing band perform “O Canada” and “My Way”; which was beautifully sung by the residents. It was a great end to a busy and active week! The residents are already talking about the next year’s games! One of our cribbage players Ken J. said “She’s cheating! I’m over here and she’s all the way over there!” As his wife Vicki J. laughed and joked: “He’s going to divorce me tomorrow!“ much to the delight of both.

Today featured 3 great events at College Park Retirement Residence. Our morning began with 32 card sharks pegging it out for Cribbage Gold. Words were flying this morning as well during the battle for Scrabble supremacy. All participants had a great time! After a wonderful lunch, Whist was “clubbed” out until we finally had a winner who once again was our newcomer, Steve O. Our Chef de Mission, Chris Oehler, took home the Gold in Cribbage, followed by our newest resident, Steve O. No name calling here, just a fun game of Scrabble took place this morning with Alvina F. taking home the Gold with Phyllis W. and Maria De. grabbing the Silver and Bronze out of the bag. Medals presented by MLA Christine Tell. Our newest resident, Steve O., took home the Gold in Whist along with Erna M. and Bernice W. finishing second, but by a tie breaker, Erna earned the silver and Bernice took home the bronze. Medals presented by MP Ralph Goodale. New resident, Steve O, took home not one, but TWO medals; Gold in Whist and Silver in Cribbage – he did not know about registering for the games, he just joined in last minute. MP Ralph Goodale stated during his speech that at the House of Commons this week that All Seniors Care Senior Games were complimented and our ASC Games week acknowledged!!! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Mayor Michael Fougere, MLA Christine Tell and MP Ralph Goodale who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Today featured 3 great events at Seine River Retirement. In the morning, it was round robin style of tenants battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” tournament of Cribbage. Meanwhile, another 20 ‘brains’ were competing in Trivia. And to end things off, 24 participants took to the tables with Bridge right after lunch! All participants had a great time! It wouldn’t be the ASC Senior Games at Seine River if it weren’t for more ties! At the end of the cribbage tournament we ended up with a clear Gold and Silver winner, however for bronze we had a tie, so the 2 battled it out in one more game. During Trivia, tenants learned all sorts of new information and had some great guesses on the questions they didn’t know! We definitely learned who the ‘smarty pants’ were in the group! Throughout Bridge, you could hear a pin drop. 6 tables of 4 battled it out for medals! During our cribbage tournament, one competitor scored 24 points – spectators got up out of their seats to see for themselves! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Honourable Rochelle Squires, Minister of Sport, Culture and Heritage, MLA Janice Morley Lecomte and MLA Colleen Mayer who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. There were a few bluff, psyches and great calls. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, we had 2 tables of participants for scrabble and 13 braved the battle of knowledge with trivia! The final day was no less fierce than the efforts and competitions we saw earlier in the week. The closing ceremony was made even sweeter with the awarding of 2 National medals in Wii Golf. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Nic Curry, MLA Kildonan, Mike McIntyre, Free Press sports writer and CJOB Mike on Crime reporter, and Eden Ramsay and Jenna from Ronald McDonald House who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Today featured two great events at River Ridge II. In the morning, it was serious round of trivia, where we had 7 residents battling it out in the playoffs and then engaging in an afternoon of Crokinole, with sore fingers they played until the end. All participants had a good time! Trivia went into playoffs with very close scores. You could hear a pin drop at Crokinole this afternoon, with a high score of 200 our gold medalist fingers needed a rest!! What a great turn out from our spectators. “Who would’ve known the ASCSG would be so much fun! I didn’t think I would walk away with a medal or two even…I will start practicing for next year’s Games after a well needed rest!!” Friendships are stronger and our River Ridge II community is left with smiles on their faces from the excitement of the week. Dr. McInnes certainly bluffed the whole table into his poker victory. The whole table sure thought he had a royal flush and not just a pair of 7’s! Today featured 2 great events at Cedarcroft Place. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of crosswords. There were some tough clues for the crosswords but all teams competed to finish the puzzle first! Meanwhile, 12 participants competed in the Name the Celebrity Game where clues were given to each team and they had to attempts to guess the Canadian celebrity. Crosswords went well with 3 teams competing to complete the crossword puzzle the fastest. Clues were read, minds were thinking and eventually one team stood on top! Next, we were on to the name the Celebrity! After each team attempted to guess 10 Canadian celebrities, we had a tie with each of the teams having 7 correct guesses, to a playoff we went with one team pulling ahead to win the gold and the 2nd and 3rd teams tying again. Another round of playoffs came to an end with one team finally coming out on top. We enjoyed the challenges of the morning, and now we will have to have a rest before this afternoon! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the family of John Nater (Perth Wellington MP): Justine Nater; Ainsley Nater,and; Bennett Nater who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Today featured 3 great events at McCarthy Place. In the morning, it was residents vs residents battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Scattergories. There were some silly answers, which gave us many laughs to share. Meanwhile, 22 participants competed in Bingo with another 6 athletes spelling away in Scrabble. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the wife of John Nater (Perth Wellington MP) Mrs. Justine Nater and her two children who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Card games are popular at Bacon Heights and today we had three fun, and serious card games. First up was Skip-Bo with regular players having a great time trying to block their opponents in order to win a medal. It was great to see that Skip-Bo attracted some people who had never played and were willing to learn the game. Later on, the “more serious games”, according to some residents, were played. In the Bridge room, 12 participants took to the tables and it was very quiet, people concentrating on their strategy while another 12 athletes competed in a game of Cribbage. All participants had a good time! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Carole Desjardins, BH marketing director, Roxane Bertrim, regional office manager and Alain Guay regional maintenance director, Markus Hickman, Chef executive who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Ben Sommerville, Associate ED was our emcee. The piper led in all the winners, assistants and chef de mission into the dining room. André Gareau sang the O’ Canada and then we proceeded in giving the medals for Friday’s games. It was exciting to give a national medal. Denise P. was really surprised and happy of her achievement. This morning Residents faced off in a battle of spelling and wits during our Scrabble competition and they had a tight time limit in the amount of points they needed to earn in less than an hour of game play! This afternoon was the round robin of Cribbage where 8 players faced off for the winning Medals! It was an all-female win today for Medals in both Cribbage and Scrabble! Our Scrabble competition featured residents competing in both English and French! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the Honourable MP Andrew Leslie who is a welcome friend to the residents and team at Chapel Hill. With the Games officially closed everyone at Chapel Hill Retirement Residence is looking forward to preparing for the 9th Annual ASC Seniors Games. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, 10 participants participated in a fun game of trivia with another 4 athletes competing in checkers. Each competition has an enthusiastic audience! It was such a pleasure to see the sportsmanship and the love shown throughout the week! Mrs. E. was the most enthusiastic spectator for our Skip Bo Tournament with every hand played she would gasp and clap enthusiastically. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the band Ear Candy, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. The competition was silent because the concentration was important. Participants in the TRIVIA game laughed heartily at the buzzers sound, screaming and even some residents pressed a little bit hard on it. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Maude Lacelle, Directrice générale, La maison Mathieu-Froment-Savoie, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. At Closing ceremony 44 residents plus assistants and volunteers meant a turnout of over 50 people. The table of honour featured the Chef de Mission Mrs. Levergneux, the best in women Mrs. C. and the best in men Mr. M. while musician Paul Marcoux who gave a terrific show. Our assistants Aline Hérault and Gérard Lalonde were present for the card competition this morning along with volunteer Diane who was in charge of the 31 for the first year of the card and the residents liked it. We presented all the medalists and thanked all our assistants with special recognition by the Honourable Steve MacKinnon, député libéral de la circonscription de Gatineau à la chambre des communes du Canada and Monsieur Gilles Carpentier, Vice-président du comité exécutif, Président du conseil d’administration de la Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) et Membre du Comité des ressources humaines pour la Ville de Gatineau.
