Marylou was full of energy during the day, shouting,” Love is in the Air”, as the morning got off to an excellent start! The Round Robin produced 4 Petanque players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Some old and new skills were evident. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Jessica and Jasmine form Auburn Bay Lake who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
Sage Hill Retirement Residence

At Sage Hill Retirement Residence, 16 competitors took to the warmed up for our toss events, while the spectators gather with great anticipation of things to come. The morning got off to an excellent start as throws were made, other missed, some slid off the end others slightly to each side but in the end the Round Robin produced 16 competitors with scores worthy of the championship! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Mr. A knocked out all others with great throws using dart-like precision. Whoever said bean bag tossing was easy has never participated in the ASC Seniors Games! Gold Medalist M.D. exclaimed: “This is the first time I’ve thrown bean bags and it’s not as easy as it looks!” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by, MP Pat Kelly who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
Summer campers had a great day of camp food, delicious honey Rice Krispie treats, and a knowledge-filled afternoon learning about the World of Bees.
St. Albert Retirement Residence

This morning Craig Toth, owner of Natural Elements Honey, a family run business just outside of St. Albert, did a fantastic presentation on Bee’s!! We were surprised how many of our residents were beekeepers! Our building was ‘a-buzz’ with all the information Craig taught us!
The afternoon got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 38 Petanque players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Baylor our Pet Therapy dog, who ‘pawdly’ participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances with a friendly wag of his tail!

The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 23 Petanque players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Nina Snyder, from Alberta Lung, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
Campers enjoyed learning about bees & honey, while snacking on our Chef’s Honey Rice Krispie Squares. We were fascinated to learn that Queen bees live 2-3 years, whereas worker bees live 2-3 weeks during the summer months! The theme this year is Love Letters – our resident Lilian told her love story: “I got to run a supermarket with my husband and travel the world with him!”

At MacTaggart Place Retirement Residence, 19 competitors entered in Pétanque atout before enjoying a day at camp.
The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 19 Pétanque atout players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skills and talents! Our Petanque court was surrounded by cheerleaders and competitors. We barely had room to fit anyone else in. Residents were cheering so loud that everyone had to check it out on their way by. Married for 64 years, long time couple Franc and Agnes competed against each other in Pétanque atout today. They cheered for each other and also booed at each other… must be true love! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Lauren, with Home Care Optometry, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
Our Summer Camp Honeybee presentation with Cassandra, was an absolute hit. Residents exclaimed they could have spent another hour learning from Cassandra and could not stop talking about all the information they learnt!
Summerwood Village Retirement Residence

Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by CNIB who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Summer camp is off to a great start. We learned so much about honey and bees today thanks to the chef demo and the queen bee. At Summerwood, “We love each other like a little family”.

The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 17 Petanque Atout players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! College Park had a new player enter the qualifying round of Pétanque atout and placed second! Everyone was so proud of her, including herself! It was so great to see how happy her participation made herself, and the other residents, feel. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Wellness Pharmacy, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
The players brought positive energy and many words of encouragement for the other players; they could not wait to continue the same energy into the first Summer Camp day! The theme this year is Love Letters, prompting Ron J. to exclaimed, “I could not be more grateful to College Park for introducing me to my Grace. She is the most beautiful girl who has my heart, and always holds my hand.”

College Park II saw the bistro brimming over with residents and excitement! So busy we couldn’t fit another competitor in if we tried! The morning got off to an excellent start with the Round Robin producing 25 competitors battling it out in the bistro for the top Petanque Player! Surrounded by many cheerleaders the ambiance was intensely elevated, exhilarating, and electrifying! The Bistro Boomed with Bellows on Behalf of Petanque Balls! New resident Evelyn S exclaimed, “This is the first time I have ever heard of the game Petanque, and I LOVE IT! When are we playing this again?” Pierre from Here For You Senior Services handed out medals at 3:00pm
Preston Park I Retirement Residence

At Preston Park, 13 competitors entered our Pétanque atout tournament before enjoying a day at Summer Camp complete with a presentation from Barefoot Earth to learn about bees! There were chuckles around when we learned the female worker bees kick the male drones out of the hive for the winter.
At one point, Jim was overheard asking Orval, who was out watering the plants, to water his wife so “their love can continue to grow!” Our residents reminisced about the bees they had kept on their family farms and what they used to do with the honey collected! For a snack we made an old favourite, Rice Krispies Squares, with the addition of honey for an extra sweet treat! Pétanque athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Kristi from Prairie Hospice who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances!

The afternoon got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 16 Petanque players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Resident and participant, Doris L. said, “Our Petanque court may be carpet and it may sometimes slope, but it’s still the best, and only, court I have played on!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Tracy Boyle of the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Jim Davidson, resident and participant, exclaimed: “Preston Park II is definitely the place for love. Heck, its where Mina and I met, courted, and were married. Without Preston Park II, we wouldn’t be together.”.
Campers were buzzing with newfound, sweet knowledge of bees and how important they are to our environment. Campers were also sporting camp bracelets and our lovely, personalized camp bandanas!

The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 19 Pétanque atout players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! You could hear the crowd cheering down the hallway. “Our Petanque board has a mind of its own…” Bob H exclaimed, “Just like in these games with love you need a gentle touch!” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Emily Kinnaird from Alzheimer Society Manitoba and Lindsay Felstead from Palliative Manitoba, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
We had so much fun at Summer Camp starting our day off joyful movement in our Sit n’ Stretch class. We had a packed afternoon learning all about Bees and then enjoyed a yummy snack prepared by our Gourmet Head Chef!
River Ridge II Retirement Residence

Day 3 of the ASCSG started off with a Camp Sunrise Stretch, then right into the ASCSG Petanque atout game, where Cheering and POM POM’S encouraged the players to go for the Gold! “That’s my Husband,” shouted Cathy proudly as he went up to take his turn at the ASCSG Petanque atout game (True Love!). Did you know that Honey Bees live in hives or colonies, the colony is made up of 1 Queen Bee, thousands of female worker bees and 100’s of Drone Bees. We learned these interesting facts today during our Summer Camp Bee talk with Karen. Afterwards, athletes and campers were joined at the award ceremony by Kim and Scott from Future Hope organization (Reform program), who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 24 Pétanque atout players in the preliminary round and 8 athletes vying for medals in the playoffs! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! While playing petanque, one of the residents were aiming for the heart and said, “Cold hands, warm heart”. If you’ve ever played Pétanque in Provence, you may have wondered what a picture of a bare-bottomed woman called “Fanny” is doing there. She is basically the goddess of Pétanque and tradition dictates that if a team fails to score a single point they must kiss Fanny’s bottom. So if you happen to be hopeless at the sport, don’t be surprised if your competitors exclaim: “Il est Fanny!” (he’s Fanny) or “Fanny paie à boire!” (Fanny pays for the drinks). Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by the recreation and blossom staff and Janice from Cancer Care MB, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.
Day 1 of ASC Summer camp was a success and our residents are looking forward to Bean Bag Toss on Day 2 of Summer Camp!
Sturgeon Creek I Retirement Residence

Our first day of ASC Camp started off with a morning stretch, the perfect way to get everyone into the competitive spirit. We then had 19 Pétanque players vying for spots in the afternoon playoff round, and many cheerleaders out for our 9:30am round robin call time. Pat T, after hitting the only 15 point shot in our playoff round, had to remind herself to “breathe” before throwing her last ball. The cheers and excitement were high. Camp filled the rest of the day with our friendly Beekeeper Carol joining us for our learning component followed by our Head Chef Arvin teaching everyone how to make Honey Rice Krispies Treats.
Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Vienna from the Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. She shared information on the benefits of exercise to combat anxiety and how great regular activity is for your mental health.

A lovely resident came up to our activity staff and commended us on the great week so far, exclaiming “I had no idea the week would bring so much bonding!”. She is spot on, the relationships gained, and memories made are one of the best parts of this busy week. We’re already looking forward to the next games in February!

After winning his gold meda, Bill C. exclaimed, “This isn’t a win for me, but a win for all of us. Love, Love, Love.” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Vienna Code, from the Anxiety Disorder Foundation, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

At Seine River Retirement Residence, 18 competitors entered in Pétanque atout before enjoying a day at camp including learning about bees through a presentation by local beekeeper Carol Wenaus! Residents also enjoyed a special treat. Our Executive Chef Jessie Nathan made some Honey Rice Krispie Squares to enjoy! YUMM! A fantastic first day of camp! Lillian. B exclaimed: “We LOVED the bee presentation! It was exceptional! We learned so much about bees and their LOVING bee communities!!”

We had 18 participants and another 15 residents cheering our athletes on! You could feel the LOVE and support from everyone! A wonderful feeling of comradery could be sensed! It was great to see and feel from all our residents! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! After the preliminary round 5 residents competed to see who would be crowned the Petanque atout Champion! In the end Jennie. M was the winner! Great skill and spirit shown by all our participants today! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Stroke Recovery Association of Manitoba, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

We were still very impressed by their skill and talents! Everyone sported their athletic-looking friendship bracelets that were handed out at Camp. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Arlene Wolfe from Diabetes Canada who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

We were very impressed by their skill and talents. A 100-year-old resident surprised us with her arm strength! She made the play-offs and gave it her all.” Everybody is so excited for the summer camp and for the Chef’s Table, our Chef made Honey Cake as a salute to the Bees presentation. The morning got off to an excellent start as the round robin produced 11 Pentanque atout players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skills and talents! But our day had not come to an end yet, our afternoon was filled with good food, great friends, and lots of fun. Our chef Don showed us how to make a beautiful watermelon and cucumber salad with a honey marinate and some amazing apple honey muffins. After, Terri from One Care came and explained to us all about One Care and all the services that they offer, she even did a quick 10 minute exercise routine with us! Terri then congratulated our athletes and awarded them their medals for Petanque atout, after which we exercised our wonder and brains! Residents enjoyed a presentation by Sam Knechtel, who talked with us all about his work as a beekeeper and the importance of bees to the world! So fascinating!! Camp today just flew by with all of the fun and excitement, our campers will sleep well tonight after that fun packed day!

David E. won his THIRD medal of the senior games. With 3 games left can he take a medal home for each of them? Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Operation Come Home, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Residents were incredibly pleased with how their Summer Camp tie dye came out and even got a honey taste test from our bee presentation. “ASCSG makes me feel young again. I’m living life to the fullest,” said a resident.

At Cite Parkway,17 competitors entered in Pétanque A-tout before enjoying a day at camp. The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 17 Petanque players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Top 3 players advanced to medal round at 3 pm. Assisted Living residents had their own tournament as well. The word “Petanque” is a French noun meaning a form of lawn bowling which originated in France. We have adapted the game to become an indoor hybrid of lawn bowling and bean nag toss. While playing Petanque today, a resident said, “If you can’t get a pique (spade in French) at least go for the Heart!” Cite Parkway definitely put their hearts into the Senior Games today!

The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 23 Pétanque A-tout players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! It was a great way to kick off Summer Camp! Husband and Wife, Fred and Brenda M., held hands walking into the competition as well as walking out, only this time with medals around their necks!! Jean R. won the participation ribbon for being the best tryer! Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by John Darnell, Head Coach and General Manager, of the Forest City Thunderbirds! The Founder of Football Team in London, believes that every child has the right to play sports, so he incorporated different financial aids to ensure every child on his team gets a chance to play. He gave a wonderful speech about his journey and how important it is to keep trying. Our residents ADORED him, they ate up every word he said! He and Executive Director Tanis Siddique participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 24 Pétanque atout players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Summer Camp kicked off with Chef Brian demonstration a tasty Rice Krispie treat followed by a very interesting and passionate presentation about bees. Our mascot is Harry the Honeybee so residents resonated a lot with the presentation. Practicing our cheer for our presenter. It’s been an exciting past 3 days! We had 3 couples competing in the Pétanque tournament today. One of the couples was participating for the first time today and the smile the husband had on his face for his wife winning the bronze was priceless. He also joked that his wife was “showing him up today and he had to do better.” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Jessica and Noah from the Abilities Centre. They put on an excellent presentation about mixed ability sport and how our residents can get involved. This presentation was so fitting to what we have been doing this week and a reminder we can do anything! They then participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

All Seniors Care Summer Camp event was enjoyed by all and we were accompanied by Sam Knechtel who gave us a presentation about the importance of Bees. Afterwards we enjoyed Honey Rice Krispie Squares from our Executive Chef. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Christy Bannerman from Stratford’s Alzheimer Society and Health and Wellness Director Leisha Higgins who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances! Resident Margaret exclaimed, “You can really feel all the love from everyone this week!”

At Summit Heights, 23 competitors entered in Pétanque atout before enjoying a day at camp. The morning got off to great start! Fabulous participation! “Always try first, before you say you can’t.” Many of Summit Heights residents were intimidated by the Petanque, but once they gave it an honest try, they loved it! It will be included on our calendars going forward. Our Campfire is set up and residents excited about sing a long tomorrow. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Staff and residents, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. “You are never too old to set another goal or dream! So, dream big, over and over again!”

The residents had a ‘ball’…no pun intended! Our water girl Karine is always smiling. Everyone enjoyed pure moments of self-satisfaction and self-joy during the Senior Games and Summer Camp. We even celebrated a resident’s birthday during our Pétanque game! De la Gappe is so proud of everyone’s efforts this week!! It was a great day!!!
National Medals will be announced later in the week and will be awarded at a special awards presentation during the afternoon Closing Ceremonies to be held at all buildings Friday, August 12th, 2022. Media are welcome to attend.
