Day 3 – Pétanque-atout & Billiards & More
Day 3 of All Seniors Care Games is in the Record Books
THESE ARE THE BEST OF TRADITIONAL THINGS… Day 3 of the 2020 All Seniors Care Seniors Games was filled with exciting action across the country today, as Billiards and Pétanque-atout tournaments were contested. With competitors engaged in friendly competition competing for medals and bragging rights at 30 retirement communities. Competitors experienced tension, excitement, cheers and laughter. The All Seniors Care Seniors Games over the years have seen many multi-sport athletes with a great example being at Chapel Hill in Ottawa where Bowling Assistant Hélène B. has earned at least one medal every year for the last 5 years.
With the theme of this year’s All Senior Games being ‘Traditions’ it was wonderful to hear residents reminisce on their family traditions. In Edmonton we heard “We used to play pool at Victor’s Pool Hall every Sunday, so playing today brought back great memories. We should play every week and start a new Tradition here!” While, in Regina, Yvonne R., exclaimed: “Today, we had pickerel for lunch, it was so good that it took me back to the days fishing at Waskesiu Lake and catching fresh pickerel… today’s lunch reminded me of our family traditions”.
National medals will be awarded at a special presentation during Closing
Ceremonies on Friday, Feb. 7th, 2020 Media are welcome to attend all events.

It was a very close contest for Gold, with Nick F. emerging as the winner. Meanwhile some very driven competitors entered the Billiards Tournament. They have practiced daily for months. 9 Ball is a quick game and the tournament was set up as “Best of Three”. The final competition for Gold was very tense as it went back on forth as to who might win. A shot was missed, and Frank took full advantage to clear the table for the win! The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced four Pétanque-atout players vying for Play Off status. We were very impressed by the high level of skill and talent in this competition. “Our seasoned competitors are amazing, as they welcomed all newcomers to the Seniors Games this year.” Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Kari Kerychuck of the Alzheimer Society, who participated by placing the medals on our winning athletes and in congratulating them on their performances. At Summerwood, the billiard games drew quite the crowd. Game play was intense and had several crowd members on the edge of their seats. 3 players won at least one of their games and had to replay their opponents to determine winners. All players were great sports and shook their opponent’s hands after the game. Pétanque-atout saw a different crowd, but as one player stated there seemed to be a lot of OOOOOOHs. There was more cheering and shouts of encouragement for the players. People were chanting names. One of our residents is wining more medals during the 11th Seniors Games than the they did during last year’s games. The Bistro was overflowing with spectators and participants alike for the morning round of Billiards! Pool sharks cruised the felt, showing off their moves! At Pétanque-atout, there was standing room only and the name board had to be extended to include all the competitors! Our Billiards round robin had lots of nail-biting moments with two games coming down to a single shot! In Pétanque-atout we had a 15 pointer first thing that had everyone cheering! During our Billiards matches, we learned that one of our athletes, a first-time ASC Games competitor, actually grew up in a pool hall in rural Manitoba… Athletes, families and guests were joined by Judy Bruce-Smith, President of Before the Bridge Senior K-9 Rescue, with whom we’ve done past fund-raiser and awareness events such as the Seniors loving Seniors adoption fair. A Tradition in our family was that for birthdays we always had Jeannie’s cake. My aunt started the tradition of putting a coin into the cake pieces and we’d carefully go through eating with our fork until we found it; sometimes a quarter sometimes a dime… we were very careful – no one ever choked and we were excited to see what we would find! I did it for my kids at their parties and now they do it for their kids and grandkids!

At Résidence de la Gappe phase 2, we had 25 players to Pétanque-atout. A resident who loves to compete and never plays Pétanque-atout arrived early and asked me to play her rounds right away since she had an appointment this afternoon at the doctor’s, but she wanted to play her luck like everyone else. Nathalie, a PAB from the 7th floor, worked hard to get her residents from the to the activity and was is so proud that two of her residents won medals, 1st place and 2nd place we were all happy for them. It was quite funny… everyone on the team came out for the presentation of the medals, the Director General, the chef, Wellness Director, and the PAB of each respective floor helped us to present the medals. Our chef de mission was really interested and efficient today, he worked hard to give the Pétanque-atout balls to each player, it was really a great job. We had a birthday and we sing all together at the snack, and the chef give him is cake, wonderful moment!

At Residence de la Gappe phase 3 and 4, 24 athletes competed in Shuffleboard, and 31 Bocce players battled for medals. The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round with Mrs. L. at Pétanque-atout hit the 103 points & Mrs. D. at Shuffleboard produced 140 points playing for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! This afternoon at the Pétanque-atout we had a lot of fun after taking out the pom-poms the residents let themselves loose. Laughter and shouts of joy brought the party into the residence! When a resident had a bad score, they booed with the pom-poms down instead of up! It was such a great atmosphere at LG. Athletes were joined at the award ceremony by Stéphanie Gagnon-Lemons from Lobe, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Mrs. M, a resident in Phase 3, laughed and cheered so much that she has lost her voice.

At billiards we had more than twenty competitors with our newest resident, Mr. Roland F., was not afraid of the challenges and ranked among the 4 finalists. The competition was huge between Mr Alfred G., who each year wins the medals and our star women Mrs. Rose C. and Mrs. Irene P. were there to compete! The morning got off to a good start with the Round, which produced 60 Pétanque-atout players in the medal competition! We were very impressed with their skills and talents! Later, the Pool Sharks showed their accuracy. The athletes were joined at the awards ceremony by Andre Carriere, Diane Chabot ED Château Symmes and Johanne Alexandre, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes for their performance. The Games have awakened a lot of memories and tradition, Ms. Pauline C., 95 years, told me her story of her journey on one of the family traditions from which she was the only girl among 7 little guys, where she was the protected.
