Auburn Heights Retirement Residence

At Auburn Heights Retirement Residence, 10 Wii Golfers took to the links while 18 athletes competed in Shuffleboard. Our shuffleboard competition was narrowed down to 9 players competing for the top 3 spots in the playoffs! We had four golfers tied for 3rd place, so we had to have an addition 2 games to secure the top 3 positions. We had so many participants in shuffleboard, we had to proceed with Wii golf medals and continuing shuffleboard with medals presented before dinner. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by David Usherwood, the head of the Cochrane legion and a member of CARP (Canadian Association of Retired Persons) who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances, and also got to watch some of the shuffleboard and Wii playoffs much to his and our delight! “Oh you are sneaky… you know what! You show him Anne!” – said one resident as they cheered on another in shuffleboard! After receiving a medal, our 101 year old resident Alice from the memory care floor said “I never received anything like that!”

At Sage Hill we had a magnificent turnout for Shuffleboard this morning with 16 competitors and many, many spectators. It was a huge hit! Our Gold Medalist Bev Smith made it seem like he had been playing his whole life! Wii Golf got off to an excellent start as 10 Golfers took to the links. In the end the Round Robin produced no golfers with scores under par, however Ron D. took home the gold scoring right on par and everyone had a blast. We were very impressed by their skill and enthusiasm! Global TV was with us this morning to film the Shuffleboard and interview our competitors. Look for us on the news tonight! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by our special volunteer Meena, and her father who helped us with the Games today and participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Silver Medalist Peter Mitchell joked: “If I win one more medal I am going to fall over!”

At St. Albert Retirement Residence 4 Golfers took to the links, all were rookies. We were very impressed by their skill and talents and their ability to laugh at themselves and each other and we had such a supportive audience. You could hear the laughter all the way down the hall. Shuffleboard seems to be the athlete and crowd favorite with 8 athletes competing. Residents poked fun at each other, friendships were put to the test as “besties” duked it out against each other for medals. The supportive living residents had their own game of floor shuffleboard with 6 athletes going for Gold. Families and staff were present, there wasn’t an empty seat in the games room. And then 12 supportive living residents competed in golf and I’m sure we will be finding golf balls all over the residence. The energy was high and everyone had a fabulous day, such a family involvement is amazing. We had family members help keep score, help with the medal ceremony and so many cheerleaders. What a fantastic day!! Phyllis to Hannah: “Right now you’re not my friend… its every lady for herself and you’re going down.” To which Hannah replied: “bring it on…. But don’t worry you can still sit with me at lunch.”

At Rutherford Heights 12 Golfers took to the links, some sliced others hooked but in the end the Round Robin landed us with a tie for 1st place that had to be settled with an extra hole to determine who took home the gold!! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! The original 14 shuffleboard contestants ended in playoff match when Mr E. noticed Mrs. M. was setting up quite a block of shuffleboard disks and said “geez, how do I get past that? She’s setting up the great wall of China up there”. Who said Golf was a good walk spoiled has never participated on the ASC Seniors Games! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by The Edmonton Public Library who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Enthusiastic golfer Dennis exclaimed: “Oh boy, that wasn’t a very good shot, look I’m in the salad!!” just after his ball landed in the grass just off the green.

This morning we started off with Shuffleboard and residents were already excited to get started. Many residents come to watch their fellow residents play. Wii Golf was to follow right after, and we had a huge crowd to come and cheer the players on! “We had a resident who was playing Wii golf that was hitting overhand. It worked! Whatever works!” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Terry a representative from Pharmacare, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Gold Medalist Ken Jolin exclaimed: “Finally I won a Gold!!”

We were very impressed by their skill and talents! John and Calvin knocked out all shuffle boarders with great throws and hits. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Sharon from Pharmacare, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. One of our medallists was overheard saying: “I was so happy when I won the medal I almost fell off my feet.”

Lorna who joined Golf for the first time this year ended up in a tie game with Edie – our Silver medalist. What a close game! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the Saskatoon Open Door Society, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Gold Medalist Frank Zawada: “I had to play 3 playoff holes after the round robin, just to make it to the finals. There was some fierce competition out there today!”

At College Park Retirement Residence 8 Golfers took to the links. While 20 athletes competed in Shuffleboard. The morning got off to a “swinging” start as the Round Robin produced 3 golfers with scores under par! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Our shuffleboard competition was “rocking” this morning with completion of the round robin play. You think it was cards today with the way the tables turned; the odds ended with our underdog, Art N. making his way to the final game. Today at College Park out foursomes teed off with a maddening crowd of spectators enjoying the weather… “providing you did not look out the window!” Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Michelle Sorenson from Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism and Karen Lisk, Executive Director of College Park who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances.

Lorenz M. knocked out all shuffle boarders with great throws and hits… We have had a number of residents who are in wheelchairs competing during this year’s games, though some of them were hesitant to sign-up, most of them had scores that brought them to the finals! There is an equal chance for everyone to play and win! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Marion with Osteoporosis Canada who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Bronze medalist Hazel W. exclaimed “I wasn’t even going to come to this, but I am glad I did!”

Silver Medalist Mrs. Helen Brownlee exclaimed at the conclusion of the Floor Shuffleboard Tournament: “I am just so excited to win … to win any medal especially a silver medal! At 95yrs of age to win a floor shuffleboard medal… who would have thought?”

The morning got off to an excellent start as shots were made, other missed, some sliced other hooked but in the end the Round Robin produced 6 golfers with scores under par! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Mr. & Mrs. B. knocked out all shuffle boarders with their great throws and hits… Our Shuffleboard tournament was a great success with 104 year old Lloyd B. and his wife Alice taking home medals again this year. They secured the gold medal by one point after a really exhilarating playoff match. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Catherine Kaufmann from the Alzheimer’s Society who participated in congratulating all athletes on their performances. Phyllis H. exclaimed: “I’m wearing it to dinner, I think I deserve it” when telling her friends that she won today’s gold medal in Wii golf.

At Seine River Retirement Residence, 6 Golfers took to the links. While 24 athletes competed in Shuffleboard. The morning got off to an excellent start as shots were made, other missed, some sliced other hooked but in the end the Round Robin produced 1 golfer with a score under par! Shuffleboard took place in our front lobby, so, tenants, staff and visitors stopped to watch and cheer on the competition! Shuffleboard took WAY longer than expected, as we had continuous ties! It was so fun ad we had so many laughs, as round after round ended in ties and it took over and hour to find our bronze, silver and gold medalists! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Wii Golf competitor Cathy V. turned faced the crowd and exclaimed in between holes: “see golf isn’t boring, it is So exciting!”

The skies were fair over the course at River Ridge I for our first round of morning golfers. Relative newcomer Eva C. had a Chip-in for an Eagle on the second hole of the course! Floor shuffleboard ran into sudden death overtime in a battle for Bronze! 11 new faces found their way down to the shuffleboard court while Gerald O., usually a non-competitor, has stepped up and has been in medal contention for 3 out of his four sports, taking bronze in yesterday’s Bocce heat. Retired WO Dave McLaughlin, a speaker from the Memory Project. And representative of our military heroes, shared his personal hero story and assisted with medal presentation. Duffer Lou K. having a bad day on the course commented: “I can’t wait to get out on the real course and prove to myself my game isn’t really this bad!!”

At River Ridge II, 6 Golfers took to the links. While 7 athletes competed in Shuffleboard. Practice has paid off this morning for our Floor Shuffleboard winners, with a top score of 210. The game started off friendly and ended competitive with pompoms flying around! This afternoon, Wii Golf was a hard game to crack with a top score of +3. With the help of our cheering section and our silver medalist kicking her heals off; our golfers worked hard to finish the game! It sure felt like our golfers walked the course this afternoon; as they worked hard playing “Army Golf” watching the ball go left, right, left! Congratulations to Mr. P. for bringing in the gold in both events today! Way to go!! During our exhausting game of Wii golf, one of the golfers joking around said: “Do I get to ride a golf cart after that shot?”

Mrs. W. knocked out all shuffle boarders with great throws and hits… During our shuffleboard tournament our competitors certainly had their game faces on! They had hits and take outs flying across the board battling their way to the Gold medal position. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Age & Opportunity: Support Services for Older Adults who participated in congratulating the winning Athlete’s on their performances. Mrs. W., after receiving her 4th medal of the Games held all of her medals up in her hand and shouted, “LOOK AT ALL THESE MEDALS I’VE WON!”

The morning got off to an excellent start as shots were made, other missed, some sliced other hooked but in the end the Round Robin produced 6 golfers with a score of par or better on at least 1 hole! Mrs. S. knocked out all shuffle boarders with great throws and hits. We wanted to get out of the cold, so the residents decided they were golfing in beautiful Hawaii for the morning. What a gorgeous calm, sunny, warm morning on the golf course! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Terri and Jess (one care), who participated in congratulating the winning Athlete’s on their performances. Gold Medalist Mr. F exclaimed: “I won the Gold?! When did I win that?”

Margret and Yvonne showed much friendly competition, knocking each other out in Shuffleboard. One golfer hit back and forth between two bunkers for several shots. She joked that she was just missing the beach and was enjoying the sand on her toes. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by The Alzheimer’s Society who participated in congratulating the winning Athlete’s on their performances.

At Beacon Heights, 4 Golfers took to the links. While 14 Athlete’s competed in Shuffleboard. Just before the start of our round, the CBC Radio came to interview Don, Karina, and Flo about the games. The shuffleboard game was a lot of fun, there were a few beginners who had little chance of winning but they were really proud to be included in the game. Some shots were really good, many opponents didn’t make many points because they were pushing each other off the board. It’s almost unbelievable that we got some scores. Lots of laughs, great crowd encouragements. On a cold sunny day on the Beacon Heights Wii Golf Club 4 players competed for gold. With scores of 41, 42 and 43 the game was extremely close. Having been on our feet all day, all week…it was appropriate to learn about taking care of our feet. Sandra and Brenda had lots of great information to share with us. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Brenda and Sandra nurses, who congratulated all Athlete’s on their performances.

At Chapel Hill Retirement Resident, 4 Golfers took to the links to show off their skills. While 8 athletes competed in Shuffleboard. Again today we had 3 of our athletes who were signed up to play in both the Shuffleboard and Wii Golf Tournaments so we got off to a busy start! We had two competitors play in the Golf Tournament who had never even tried before! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Miles Huff of the Eastern Ottawa Resource Center who was happy to be here at Chapel Hill as we partner with them and provide transportation for them on Wednesdays as they do so much for seniors in our community. “Watatow!!!! Not bad for a beginner!” Hélène Bray after her Gold Medal win at Wii Golf!

Who ever said Golf was a good walk spoiled has not participated in the ASC Seniors Games! Today at Cite Parkway Retirement Residence our golfers teed off amid perfect weather conditions and had an amazing time. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Meredith White from the Ottawa Alpha Phi Chapter to discuss the Alpha Phi Foundation. She participated in congratulating all athletes on their performances, as well as educate our residents on all they do for women’s heart health in North America! Gold Medalist Pierrette Migneault exclaimed: “Now I can finally show off a gold medal! Everyone played so well!”

At Résidences de la Gappe phase 1, 5 Golfers took to the links. While 9 Athlete’s competed in Sandbags. Mr. Roger C. who never played before decided at the last minute to complete and he won bronze! Mrs. D. who lives on one of our care floor one silver medal. We are very proud that two of our care floor residents Mr. C. and Mrs. D. did so well at the games. Mrs. Chartrand who is massotherapeute (Au centre de la Paresse) and our kiosk of the day gave away the medals today. Double medallist Mr. G. is a new resident and is very proud of his results as this is his first ever Seniors Games.

At Résidence de la Gappe phase 2, 30 athletes played for the medals. It was the first time the residents were playing washer. They were excited. Our attendant Aline had a lot of energy and she clowned with the residents much to everyone’s delight. Our director Suzie Clavet came for the medal presentation with assistant of the washer Anick. Nice atmosphere of the whole team. Our Gold Medalist Mrs. C. paraded in the hallway at the time of the announcement of her medal. She was very happy.

At Residence de la Gappe, 16 Golfers took to the links. Mrs. G. knocked out all shuffle boarders with great throws and hits… Mme B., one of our contestants had achieved a “Chip-in” and didn’t realize it till after everyone told her what it was. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Helene Lirette, Jacqueline McKnight and Lisa Paré and our chef de mission Huguette Mangeon who participated in congratulating the winning Athlete’s on their performances. Because of our awesome tie breaking scores we have to keep on playing so we can beat each other to the round! Say J.C. G. Gold medal winner of Wii Golf. Mme M. expressed how important her children are to her today during the games, she was looking for inspiration and found some!

At Chateau Symmes, 12 Golfers took to the links. While 24 Athlete’s competed in Shuffleboard. Mrs. P. knocked out all shuffle boarders with great throws and hits. For shuffleboard today we were honoured to have as a participant Elizabeth D., our 101 years old resident, (way a go miss D.) it was amazing!!!! So much enthusiasm for this game…it’s our favourite!!! I remember to Encourage Mr. P. to subscribe for the game and finally everyday go by and he is in every games!!!! and won medals!!!! Today he thank me to encourage him to be in and to push them to have fun: “At Chateau Symmes nothing is boring…and I think am gonna have seniors games every week…lol!!! just kidding.” Always a pleasure to see their smiles when they receive their medals it`s priceless.

We had a great day at the care floor, with our residents. We started the plastic shiffle board with 7 people were able to finish the game with the first 3 winners. We were impressed with the skills and the participation of some residents during gaming like Mrs. M. Normally who does not like game in group. About the Mini golf we had almost the same participation, so the same team as that of shuffleboard, missed Madame E. who went to the hairdressing salon. In the team there was only one man, but that does not prevent that he had his medal. We thank the daughter of Mrs. R. for her support in the transportation of residents in wheelchairs. This day was a very fulfilling day for everyone.
