Today featured two great events at Laurel Heights. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Cribbage. Meanwhile, 12 participants took to the tables with another 8 athletes competing in Bridge. Bridge was an all ladies free for all!! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Her Honour Lois Mitchell, His Honour Doug Mitchell, MLA Denise Woollard, and Trish Green who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. “I didn’t believe my ears the first three times Evan called my name” happily exclaimed Ruben Friedenburg our national silver medalist for Bocce.

Today featured three great events at Rutherford Heights. In the morning, it was everyone for themselves battling it out in both speed and quick thinking for the medals in a “friendly” game of Trivia. There were a few quick points attained and more than a few brain stumpers. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, 4 participants took to the tables competing in Kings in the Corner. Finally, 20 players joined in a highly competitive game of shuffleboard. Today we had an amazing amount of participants and spectators attend our floor shuffle board game; the energy in the room was amazing. To see everyone cheering on their fellow competitors, encouraging each other, and helping each other out it was great support and comradery during competitive games. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by City Councillor Bryan Anderson who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. With the Games officially closed everyone at Rutherford Heights is looking forward to preparing for the 8th Annual ASC Seniors Games. Bronze Medalist for our Memory Care Trivia challenge Jessie G. exclaimed: “Me? You gotta be kidding me!!! ”

Today featured one great event at Auburn Heights. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Bridge. Bidding was hot, cards were slapping on the table. Nobody wanted to be the dummy! One team was comprised of our longest standing residents and our newest resident. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Auburn Heights Executive Director Dorothy Britten, who participated in congratulating the winning Bridge Players on their performance. Athletes and Volunteers and staff were joined by Father Green for the Closing ceremony. Father Green of the Anglican Church presented the floral bouquets and the medals to the bridge winners. He provided a Blessing for closing of the Ceremonies. A Medalist said “This is the first time in my life I ever remember winning anything.”

Today featured one very popular event at Lewis Estates Retirement Residence. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Cribbage. Residents were great at helping one another with counting and making sure everyone was one track. I am really proud of our little community here, however, never have a husband and wife compete at cribbage. When one wins the other automatically claims that they cheated!
Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by MLA Jon Carson and Councillor Andrew Knack, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. For our closing ceremonies we had the Central Lions Swing band perform “O Canada” and “My Way”. We had our dignitaries MLA Jon Carson and Councillor Andrew Knack who said encouraging words to our residents. It was a great end to a busy and active week! The residents are already talking about the next year’s games! One of our cribbage players Ken Jolin said “She’s cheating! I’m over here and she’s all the way over there!” to which his wife Vicki Jolin replied “He’s going to divorce me tomorrow!“ to laughter all around.

Today featured three events at Preston Park Retirement Residence. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a friendly game of Kaiser. This year we had a tie game for the bronze medal and had to playoff! Later, everyone enjoyed in a friendly competition of Cribbage and Bridge later in the day. It is with great pride we awarded not one but two medals to, Betty Hidlebaugh, 100 years young. Bronze medal in Cribbage and a GOLD medal with the high score of 2,600 for her efforts at Bridge. This year Preston Park’s hard working athletes won three National medals! Bronze to Clint Dalshaug for Wii Golf, Betty Blair Silver for Wii Golf and Don Pearson GOLD for Wii Bowling!!!! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Minister Don Morgan, City Councillor Mairin Loewen and MP Kevin Waugh Representative Carl Melnyk who joined in congratulating, handing out medals and flowers to all of our awesome athletes, winners and Chef de Mission. A thunder of Bang bang sticks appreciated each athlete as they received their medals with pride. Teary eyes, smiles and cheers of camaraderie were heard throughout the Dining Room. Dignitaries remarked how wonderful the event was and they look forward to coming back year after year. City Councillor Mairin Loewen exclaimed “You guys are good at this, you should take the bang-bang sticks to question period.”

Today featured 3 great events at Preston Park II. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of cribbage there were 16 teams in all. Meanwhile, 12 Bridge Players took to the tables Thursday evening and with another 20 athletes competing in Rummy Wednesday night. We had 16 teams for the Cribbage tournament ending after 4 round of round-robin play with 3 teams having a perfect score of 484 each. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Minister of Advanced Education Don Morgan, City Councillor Marion Loewen and Janelle Hofman from the Health Region who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Our bronze national medal was presented by our Chef de Mission Bjorg Birt to Ruth Bristow for Wii Golf. With the Games officially closed everyone at Preston Park II is looking forward to preparing for the 8th Annual ASC Seniors Games. You can feel the anticipation in the air! The day got off to a quick start this morning at 9am! The Whist players took to the bistro first to vie for medals. Immediately following Whist, the bridge players took over to play their games. Cribbage immediately followed lunch, most card players played all three card games and one comment was “I’ll be counting 15’s to get to sleep tonight”. The Twiliters are entertaining before closing ceremonies and everyone is eager to hear if we have any nations medals!

In the morning, there was 12 players battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of Cribbage. Meanwhile this afternoon, the thinking continued with 8 participants taking part in Quiddler and 11 participants taking part in Trivia. The room was quiet as everyone’s thinking caps were on. All participants had a good time! “As stated by many exercising your mind is just as important as physically exercising your body!” Today at Victoria Landing all minds worked overtime as participants challenged each other and themselves through 3 different mental games! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by MP Larry Maguire and MLA Drew Caldwell who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Cribbage Gold Medalist Mrs. Pauline Palmer sang as she counted her last hand “15-2, 15-4, a pair is 6 and the rest don’t mix” and when she was presented with the gold medal for Cribbage she exclaimed “ I am shocked!!!”

In the morning, it was the Cribbage players battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game 18 players were down bright and early. There were 12 Players involved in Bridge and played last night. Aki Sato took home the Gold on his last night here at SC1 as he and his wife will be moving to River Ridge, a nice send off from his bridge group here at SC1. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, 15 participants took part in our ASC Senior Games Trivia. It was chef De Mission Jean West that took home the gold in a tie with card game assistant Evelyn Smith. Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by MLA Sharon Blady and City Councillor Sean Dobson, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Ron Paley was here to perform. When asked what he should play for a closing song the request for My Way was a quick response. It was a great way to end the Senior Games and close our ceremony with everyone singing one more time My Way. Thursday evening, 8 avid cribbage players took their places at the tables. The tournament took place over 2 hours, and in the end winners were determined. In the morning, the bridge players took over. Twelve players, all women, commenced promptly at 10 a.m., and over the next couple hours cards and bids were flying. After the whist players had their go at the cards. Once again, the shift and shuffle, but times were good, and winners can out of the “deal”. Most amusing gold medal moment of the day was when the whist players were tied after two rounds of play. Time was short so they decided to cut for gold. Several of the medalists were people who have not medaled in any event before! Great to see the medals being dispersed among more participants than ever before!! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by MLA Sharon Blady and city councillor Shawn Dobson, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. It has been a week of much laughter, comradery and all out fun as we traversed through the events. Rest and relaxation will follow in the coming days, before training for the 2017 games will begin.

Thursday evening and Friday featured 3 great events at Seine River Retirement Residence. Last night 18 tenants entered a round robin tournament and battled it out in Cribbage, producing a final game of 3 to decide who wins which medal. Hearts were racing, crowds were cheering and more than 15 people were crowded around the cribbage board, it was definitely the most exciting crib game we have ever seen! Meanwhile, 15 participants showed off their ‘brains’ in trivia. This was the Year of the Tie at Seine River, made the games a little longer and a little more exciting! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Peter Chura (Liberal Candidate for Seine River) who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. With the Games officially closed everyone at Seine River retirement is looking forward to preparing for the 8th Annual ASC Seniors Games. You can feel the anticipation in the air! Gold Medalist Nancy Marchylo exclaimed in her preliminary game of cribbage, “I’ve been nice enough, now I’m going to sock it to you! We take no mercy at Seine River.” Gold Medalist Doreen Tough exclaimed after the games were done and ceremonies over…, “Wow that game was stressful, now I’m gonna have a drink!”

The morning was a frenzy of activity as poker, crokinole and trivia all traded competitors trying their “hands”. The crokinole tables had masses huddled around as disc after disc was shot out of bounds, each player hoping to score the button shot! Poker players dined ‘a la Vegas style’ eating at the tables – no one wanted to break the heater they were on, and Trivia had a gallery bursting at its seams as wisdom was rewarded! Not even a piper with broken pipes could dampen the enthusiasm of the closing ceremonies at River Ridge. Ours was a party atmosphere, and as dignitaries, Team leaders and medallists alike proceeded to our theme song, My Way, the energy contained within these walls spilled out of every open space. Thunder sticks and a raised chorus each time My Way rang out, spoke to the level of adrenaline that these athletes and cheerleaders have all demonstrated throughout the competition week.

Gold Medallist Helga Cychmistruk said – “last year I was a silver medallist and came up in a wheelchair; this year it’s gold and I’m walking up here – God only knows how much better it can get, but I’m sure looking forward to next year! On to 2017!!!!!”

Today featured 4 great events at Shaftesbury Park! We got off to an early start this morning with 3 events before we even had lunch! Our day began with scrabble and poker where opponents out-witted and out-bluffed their competition to make it to the medals. All participants had a good time! Next we moved on to a heated trivia session where our competitors vied to see who had the best Canadian History knowledge! We sure have some smart cookies here. Our last event of the 2016 games was our bridge tournament where our athletes battled through 12 hands to victory! The medals ceremony was very exciting for all of our participants but so exciting for Mrs. Silver when we announced her National Gold medal in Bocce that she nearly tipped her chair right over in excitement as she bounded to the front! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Tom Dercola, Nostalgia Radio, and Tricia Charles, VP Manitoba who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances and presenting our 4 NATIONAL MEDALISTS with their medals! Just before our closing ceremonies, our Chef De Mission Ms. Bancroft was waiting with all of our medalists in the theatre when she exclaimed, “There’s nothing better than seeing the shining smiles on all our winners’ faces.”

Meanwhile, 12 participants took to the tables competing in Euchre. Euchre was played by individuals accumulating the most points they could earn. It was such a nail biter as points varied from game to game! Residents hooted and hollered when they won bingo, and played loudly with lots of enthusiasm! Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Health & Wellness Director, and Executive Director who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. A lot of card actions today…we had about 24 people playing different card games. Everyone was concentrated in making the best play…not a lot of talking while card playing. We didn’t need to have playoffs in the afternoon so residents had some time to rest before the party.
Around 2:30pm the residents gathered in the dining room and “Elvis” came to entertain us. He gave all the ladies a flower…he sang is most famous songs… At 3:00pm our guests of honors we lead into the dining room by the piper Graham Ogilvie. Mr. Mauril Bélanger MP, Mrs. Madeleine Meilleur MPP, City Counselor Tim Tierney and Chief of Police Bordeleau helped to give out today’s medals. The games were declared over and “Elvis” and “The Diplomats” brought the Executive Director and Lifestyle manager up on their feet for a dance. Everyone cheered! Counselor Tierney danced with Claire Pellerin who LOVE dancing… A very touching moment when Mr. Bélanger and Mrs. Meilleur dance together before leaving. Councillor Tierney said it best; “YOU are the Champions”. The residents really were the champions this week.

Today our residents competed at Bridge and happily no daggers were thrown and nobody lost an eye! It was a fun competition and residents were excited that they didn’t have to play with their spouse. Residents were excited to show up their trivia talents in the Great Canadian Trivia Challenge. Everyone was eager to find out who was the MOST Canadian out of the group! Residents were surprised at their own memory for great Canadian Facts! Athletes were joined by their fellow residents and MPP Marie-France Lalonde. Residents were excited to get the final medals and receive their flowers! They thought it was a nice touch! We created a special award for the MVP that went to Mrs. Betty Macpherson for helping with many activities and inspiring the residents to sign up to play! With the games official closed everyone is looking forward to getting back to normal life, however all are excited about continuing on with the fun by having monthly tournaments to keep their skills sharp for next year! “I am playing so great today and I even have my wife’s permission!” –Anonymous

Today featured great events at Résidence de la Gappe phase 1. In the morning, it was the team vs team battling it out for the medals in a “friendly” game of 500 cards. There were a few bluff, psyches and great calls. All participants had a good time! Meanwhile, 8 participants took to the tables. The competition was very tight but the cards have been lucky to Mr. Trépanier and Mrs. Mageau. Mr. Trépanier was our only man in the competition and he is very happy to have won the gold medal, because it has been more than a year since he played 500 card game.With the Games officially closed everyone at [Résidence de la Gappe-phase 1] is looking forward to preparing for the 8h Annual ASC Seniors Games. You can feel the anticipation in the air! Mrs. Mageau, who is Mr. Trépanier’s partner at the 500 card game ash him “if they really won the tournament” and he said, Yes, we ate them alive!

The march this morning was extremely dynamic and fun with our musician Laurino Pagliarelle After the competition and exercise, it was party time with Helene Régimbald, she was a wonderful signer, with the oldies songs. The resident dance and enjoy the festivity with a snack to keep the energy going. Mme Suzie Clavet ED, Mr.Steven Mackinnon, Déput Liberal et his assistant Frederik Larouche, Mr. Gilles Carpentier, Counsceller of City of Gatineau and Chief of Mission Roch St-Amour and 6 PAB has assistant with our 8 medalist. At the closing ceremony Annick Charron, our Activities Director, thanked everyone that was involved in the opening and closing with a speech and flowers for each one. The winner in the 3 categories was invited in front for a group picture and everyone was clapping with excitement. To see the winners with their expression on their face was awesome and it was very emotional. At the end we closed the ceremony with the song my way with our cost host Helene Régimbald. Our chief of Mission Roch St-Amour was very emotional at the end of the day and was very thankful for the opportunity to be involved in the Olympic.

Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by Steven MacKinnon and Gilles Carpentier, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. Athletes and Volunteers were joined at the Closing ceremony by Steven MacKinnon, Liberale Candidate dans Gatineau and Gilles Carpentier, Conseiller de la Ville, District du Carrefour de L’Hôpital, who participated in congratulating the winning athletes on their performances. With the Games officially closed everyone at Residencede la Gappe are looking forward to preparing for the 8th Annual ASC Seniors Games. You can feel the anticipation in the air! Gold Medalist Germaine Mireault was so surprised by her National Bronze medal, she could not believe that she actually won!!!!!”
