ONTARIO – Their very existence sparks the imagination. Recently brought back from the edge of extinction, the Ojibwe Spirit Horses will visit All Seniors Care residents in Stratford, Ontario on Wednesday, October 20th. Residents will share in traditional Indigenous practices, songs, and drumming, led by Tod Torresan, a member of the Haudenosaunee of the Oneida Nation, followed by the opportunity mingle with these small but mighty horses.
“It’s a once in a lifetime experience”, says Hannah Silver, Vice President of Health and Wellness. “With only about 120 Ojibwe horses still in existence, to have them visit our seniors as a part of our national event is an exciting honour.”
Indigenous to Canada long before the mustang, the heritage breed will be at Cedarcroft Retirement Residence at 1:15pm and then move on to McCarthy Place residence at 2:45pm.
“The Ojibwe horse represents an act of relationship building — between horse and human, between nature and heritage, between past and present. Our dedication to excellence in senior living includes remembering that each of our residents has a life rich with memories and experiences that should be celebrated. We are proud to participate in events that allows residents to build more memories and connect to Canada’s Indigenous history in a significant way”, says Silver.
The Spirit Horses are taking part in an event that honours Bill Reid – acclaimed master goldsmith, carver, sculptor, writer, and community activist – and engages residents in the traditions of Haida art and heritage.
