We had so much excitement over our new addition to the games, the billiards skills shots competition. Twelve players started off in round one, the top 5 scorers moved on to round 2. After round 2 we had a three-way tie that went into quadruple over time to finally crown our winner! This new addition was very well received and sure to be a fan favorite year after year!
Lesson learned: Women can be pool sharks too!
We had the privilege of welcoming our MLA and Deputy Premier Mike Ellis to the podium today to award our athletes with their medals. We had a full house today to congratulate our medalists along with appetizers brought in by our local restaurant, The Park. The Calgary Humane Society came in to support and of course we finished off with entertainment by our very talented Dario Focaccio with the accordion.
One gold medalist exclaimed, “Would it be wrong of me to come to this ceremony wearing my other medals from yesterday?” We think that would be just fine!!

The excitement continued into Day 3 of the Games! Residents were eager to tackle a new day of qualifier rounds. All participants made an effort to be on their best game – their faces displayed deep concentration and focus. It was nice to hear the enthusiasm and positive encouragement once again from observers.
Cornhole qualifier Don L was on a streak in the qualifier round! He joked, “I must have been a corn farmer”!
Henry R told us, “I have participated in as many games as I can. Although I have not qualified yet in 2024, I think these games are terrific”!

FUN FACT: We had our first tie breaker during our morning round robin. Mrs. Eloise L. and Mr. Daniel M. battled it out for second place. The points gap in the tie breaker was two points!

At the end of the day, our cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much. There was no shortage of friendly banter between the athletes. The laugh of the day was hearing Dave exclaim, “Ruth, you don’t get any points for the chandelier!” when her shot went a little higher than expected in Ladder Ball.

We believe that never in the history of ladder ball at SC II have so many throws wanted to stay on the rung! But, still, they danced and twirled and then ended up under the ladder!!

At SC II, 10 players battled for medals. As the competition moved forward, one might have thought there were 100 people in the theatre – there was so much cheering going on!!! During the round robin, when Donna C. scored points in each round, she commented, “At least I wasn’t skunked!!” Spectators were treated to a nail-biting finish as 2 competitors tied for the gold medal. Thankfully, an extra round of play, established clear winners.
A recap of the day’s events took place at the Medal Presentation before medals were bestowed on the winners. Games Assistant for ladder ball, Brian T., presented the medals to the winners of the competition. Winners were Gold-Brian T., silver-Joan W., and bronze-Vera T.

This morning Lakeridge got off to a rocky start, however each athlete picked it up in the 3rd and 4th round during the ladder ball!
Cornhole was electric this afternoon. With over 40 individuals playing and watching the event. Residents were non-stop cheering each other on. No matter what an individual’s ability, everyone showed up for one another and it felt like such a community today.
A Cornhole Player who was missing all her shots and said, “I shouldn’t have had a martini before this” Everyone laughed.
In the final 3 there were 2 ties for 2nd place, which meant we needed to go to sudden death. It was a HUGE nail biter and epic performance by each athlete! Going back-to-back 5 times! George nor Diane was not feeling the pressure and matching one another’s score. Finally in the 6th sudden death round, Diane N took the victory for silver.

This morning the competition got underway quickly, as we already had several players registered and a few more added, so we had to take some chairs from the dining room to comfortably seat all our players! We finished just before lunch.
Daily Fun Fact:
One resident decided to kiss the balls for good luck and indeed, he was very lucky as he got a total of one point. The lady who was playing next looked at me and said, “If you don’t want me to have bad luck, I’ll have to clean his balls to take away his luck.” We all had a good laugh!

Ce matin, la compétition a démarré rapidement, car nous avions déjà plusieurs joueurs inscrits et quelques autres se sont ajoutés, si bien que nous avons dû prendre quelques chaises de la salle à manger pour asseoir confortablement tous nos joueurs ! Nous avons terminé juste avant le déjeuner.
Fait amusant du jour :
Un résident a décidé d’embrasser les boules pour donner de la chance et effectivement, il a été très chanceux puisqu’il a un le total des points. La dame qui jouait ensuite ma regarder, elle a dit pour que ça ne me cause pas de la malchance, je dois nettoyer ses boules pour enlever sa chance. On a tous bien rit

Fun Fact of the Day: One of the residents didn’t believe she had won! We said “Yes” to her several times and everyone laughed – what a great moment!
Competitors were joined at the award ceremony by our rental manager, Jacques, who presented and congratulated the winning athletes on their performances. It was a great moment.
Another resident had taken a real lemon, thinking that was what she was supposed to throw. Chantal, Directrice des Loisirs, said, “No, that’s my décor!”

At Fox Hollow Retirement Residence, 23 players battled for medals.
The morning got off to an excellent start as the Round Robin produced 23 Cornhole players vying for medals! We were very impressed by their skill and talents! Later, the bolas throwers showed their finesse in Ladder Ball!
